LOCAL NEWS:

The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. James Sapaugh was in to discuss road conditions with District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell. During public comments, the Salem News reporter asked for comments relative to Tuesday’s successful vote on the jail project. Presiding Commissioner Skiles said that he sincerely appreciates the voter turnout and the community support for the proposal. County Clerk Angie Curley noted that it was one of the largest turnouts in an April municipal election. Skiles was asked what the next step is now that the project is approved. He said they would be working with the architect and would possibly bring in a construction management firm that specializes in jail projects. Skiles said this was yet to be determined. In the road report, Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5450, 6200 and 5615, while materials would be added to and grading done on county roads 4210, 4080, 5080, 2440 and 2470, plus brush would be cut on county road 5450. Purcell went on to say that even with the heavy rains of around two inches there was not a lot of damage in his district. He noted that there were some downed trees and that his crews had taken care of them. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that there was considerable damage in his district and that the list was too long to note all of them. He said a low water crossing on Dent County Road 4060 was washed out, plus the bridge on county road 4050 was clogged from the debris from the recent tornado in the area. Larson stated materials would be added to Dent County Roads 2010, 3190 and 4060, while patch grading would be done on county roads 2020, 2010 and 3190. He also indicated the District Two crew was short three men. Larson made the point that his crew was aware that there was considerable damage and that it will be taken care of in a timely manner. In his report, Skiles again reiterated his appreciation for voter support of the jail project. He also noted that law enforcement and area fire departments should consider equipment upgrades by applying for the Missouri State Homeland Security Program Funding. Skiles said the application process is now open and closes May 12th. Dent Count Clerk Angie Curley said she and Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams balanced on all accounts for the month of March. She went on to say there was a 23% turnout in Tuesday’s election and she wanted to thank the polling sites, volunteers, janitors, election judges, her staff, etc. for the excellent work that was done. Sheriff Bob Wells was in with the Jail Report for March, which indicated that the average response time for the Sheriff’s Department was 8 minutes and 38 seconds and the average inmate count for March was 44. Wells said that during the last 90 days there had been 1,620 9-1-1 calls for services, which include ambulance calls, plus city and county calls. He also noted that since the installation of the central de-humidifier and air purifier, the humidity level had dropped about 30%. Wells wanted to make sure Dent County residents know that the letters soliciting donations to the Sheriff’s Department by the National Child Safety Council is legitimate and he plans to use the funds for drug education materials. After some discussion, the Commissioners voted 3-0 to have the Department of Health and Human Services test the air quality in the judicial building. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday, April 13th due to the Missouri Association of Counties Legislative Conference.
