An accident occurred in Phelps County at 7:00 Friday evening on Highway 72 just east of Route F that took the life of a 4-year old Rolla girl. According to the highway patrol report, 70-year old Jerome L. Podorski of Clarksville, Tennessee, was driving a 2008 Cadillac Escalade eastbound with a towed unit when the unit crossed the center line and struck a 2000 Jeep Cherokee, driven westbound by 30-year old Zenora K. Ridley of Rolla. The Jeep overturned on to its side and slid into the path of a 1994 Ford F-150, driven by 48-year old Jantua D. Birkenmaier of Rolla. The collision with the Ford caused the Jeep to go off the roadway and roll over. A passenger in the Cherokee, four-year old Aries Ridley, was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:28 by the Phelps County Deputy Neil Boshoff and his body was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Another passenger in the Cherokee, eight-year old Samuel Ridley, sustained serious injuries and was flown to Children’s Hospital in St. Louis.  Zenora Ridley sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. No injuries were reported for Podorski or Birkenmaier. The report stated that all occupants were wearing safety restraints and that the Jeep and Ford were removed from the scene by C & C Towing, while the Cadillac was driven from the scene. The trailer was left at the scene.

The City of Salem Planning & Zoning Commission will conduct a workshop, called by Chairman Jerry Craig, tonight at the Community Center @ the Armory beginning at 6:30 pm. At the workshop will be a review of the proposed parcel zoning for all plats inside the city limits and a review of planning & zoning priorities beyond the parcel zoning project. The workshop is open to the public.

The Kelly Miller Circus, America’s favorite circus will be in Salem TODAY and TONIGHT with performances at 4:30 & 7:30 pm at The Commons off Highway 72. The Kelly Miller Circus features elephants, zebras, camels, clowns and circus stars from around the world under the big top. TODAY ONLY!! The Circus is offering a special on tickets at the Circus Box Office where you can get any combination of four tickets for only $30. Don’t forget that “Cindy” the elephant will get her bath today at 2:00 and everyone is invited out to watch for no charge.

The Salem Police Department released reports involving property damage, a stolen pistol, possession, counterfeit money and a traffic violation. On Thursday, March 30th at 2:47 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to property damage. The report revealed that a persons or persons unknown punctured three bicycle tires valued at $48.00 at a residence in the 1400 block of South Hickory. On Friday, March 31st at 3:51 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 500 block of East Tenth Street in reference to a stolen pistol. The report revealed that someone unknown took a Sig Saur .380 caliber pistol valued at $550.00 from a vehicle. On Saturday, April 1st at 12:43 in the early morning, officers of the Salem Police Department were conducting a warrant investigation at a residence in the 700 block of East Jack. The investigation led to the arrest of a 37-year old female of Rolla for possession of a controlled substance and on an active arrest warrant from Phelps County. She was also found to be in possession of five counterfeit $100 dollar bills and was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant, extradition from Phelps County and for investigation of counterfeiting. That same morning early at 4:55, an investigation led an officer to locate a counterfeit $100 dollar bill that had been tended at Casey's General Store located on East Highway 32. Further investigation led the officer to a residence in the 700 block of East Jack. During the investigation, a 23-year old male of St. Clair, Missouri was taken into custody for possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. He was incarcerated pending an application for a warrant. The counterfeit investigation is ongoing. On Monday, April 3rd at 5:02 in the afternoon, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The stop led to the arrest of a 31-year old Salem male for driving while having his license revoked. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The US forest service is now accepting applications for summer Pathways Internships. The application must be completed by April 12th. Applications must be at least 16 years of age. The internship is for the summer of 2017 but could last up to a year. Applications will be accepted in the fields of forestry, recreation, engineering, surveying, natural resources and administrative support. Applications can be found at www.USAJOBS.gov. Mike has been through the program and is willing to help anyone desiring to go through the program.

The Salem Baseball Tigers will host Mountain Grove today at 4:30 at the SHS Baseball Field. Salem is 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the SCA.

The Salem Tigers Tennis Team defeated Mountain View/Liberty Thursday by an 8-1 margin. They will face Rolla today and Willow Springs tomorrow with each starting at 4:00.

Scott Feldman tossed six scoreless innings on Sunday and Adam Duvall banged out three hits, leading the Cincinnati Reds to an 8-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Carlos Martinez gave up six hits and six runs in five-plus innings with a walk and three strikeouts. The Cardinals will be in Washington tonight starting at 5:55 on KSMO or immediately after Salem baseball.

Evan Gattis worked a bases-loaded walk in the 12th inning and the Houston Astros rallied for a 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday in Houston. Brandon Moss, Mike Moustakas and Salvador Perez all homered for Kansas City. The Royals will host Oakland tonight.

The St. Louis Blues clinched 3rd place in the Central Division Saturday with a 5-4 win over Carolina, then on Sunday, Vladimir Tarasenko scored his 39th goal of the season early in the third period after Vladimir Sabotka tied the game give the Blues a 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche in the final game of the regular season for both teams. The Blues face Minnesota in the playoffs starting Wednesday night at 8:00 on KSMO with Game 1 in Minnesota.

Vladimir Sobotka has returned from the KHL in Russia and has signed a three-year contract extension worth $10.5 million that will begin in the 2017-2018 season.

Funeral services for Laura Jane Studdard of Sullivan, age 81, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Pea Ridge Pentecostal Church in Pea Ridge. Visitation will be at the church from 10:00 until service time Wednesday. Interment will be in the Reedville Cemetery in Pea Ridge. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Graveside services and interment for Edwin W. Howald of St. Louis, age 89, will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:00 at the Lakewood Park Cemetery in Afton, Missouri. Visitation will be Thursday from 10:00 to 11:30 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Funeral services for Sandra Lee (Williams) Sweeten of Rolla, age 71, will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:00 at the Rolla Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Thursday from 12:00 noon until time of service. Memorials are suggested to the Rolla Animal Shelter.
