Today is the 26th anniversary of the existence of the first edition of Your World Today in Salem and Dent County. The idea of a daily newsflier was originally conceived by Steve Smith of Smith Signs and General Manager Stan Podorski of KSMO. Your World Today debuted in St. Patrick’s Day “green” on March 2nd of 1991 with 200 copies of the paper delivered around town to 20 businesses. Two sponsors from the first edition are still advertising today and have never come off: C&E Auto Sales and Roberts-Judson Lumber Company.

Wednesday morning was the open of the catch-and-keep trout season at Montauk State Park near Salem. A total of only 1,415 trout tags were sold as of 3:30 PM which is not bad for the middle of the week. Of that total, 105 of the tags were for children. A total of 51 lunkers were on the board as of 3:30 Wednesday afternoon and the largest trout caught was a rainbow coming in at 9 pounds, 10 ounces caught by Randy Maccash of Rolla. The next largest trout taken was a nine pound, one ounce rainbow taken by Layman Wilder of Ohio. The catch and keep trout season will be open until October 31st.

The Dent County Sheriff Department has released a number of reports. On Tuesday, February 21st, the deputies executed a search warrant on Dent County Road 3273. During the search, deputies located 2 stolen ATV's, a stolen arc welder and a revealed a small plastic tube that contained visible crystalline residue that field tested positive for methamphetamine. As a result, 33-year old Christopher Roberts of Salem was arrested and transported the Dent County Jail. He was charged with two counts of felony stealing and one count of possession of a controlled substance. His bond was set at $50,000 cash only. Then on Wednesday, February 22nd in the early morning hours, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Highway 72 near the 72 Farm Center. A consent to search was granted for the vehicle and was conducted by deputies who located a coin purse that contained two pipes and a clear zip lock bag containing a green leafy substance that field tested positive for the presence of THC. As a result, a passenger in the vehicle, 19-year old Isaac Ghormley of St. Clair, was arrested. He was fingerprinted, issued a citation for possession of marijuana, and was released. On February 22nd at 9:00 in the morning, a search warrant was executed in the 200 block of South Washington. During the search, a rifle was located leaning up against a wall. Due to being a convicted felon, 45-year old Richard LaBrash Jr of Salem, was arrested and transported to the Dent County Jail. Deputies also located a small plastic baggie containing a crystalline substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine. This was located in LaBrash’s wallet. LaBrash was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance. His bond was set at $20,000 cash only. On Friday, February 24th, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Highway 19 North near 10th Street and a consent search of the vehicle was conducted. During the search, two capsules that had residue that field tested positive for the presence of heroin were located. A short term narcotics investigation was then conducted, and 27-year old Sarah Chapman of Cuba and 27-year old Jackie Tucker of Salem were transported to the Dent County Sheriff’s Office. Chapman was found to be in possession of a pipe with white residue that field tested positive for methamphetamine, two syringes, and three heroin capsules that field tested positive for heroin. Tucker was found to be in possession of a syringe, three full heroin capsules, and five partial heroin capsules, which field tested positive for heroin. Chapman was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance and delivery or possession of a controlled substance at a county jail. Her bond was set at $30,000 cash only. Tucker was charged with possession of a controlled substance and delivery or possession of a controlled substance at a county jail. Her bond was set at $20,000 cash only. Also on Friday, February 24th, deputies made contact with two vehicles that were road side on Highway 72 near Lake Spring. Upon contact, deputies knew one of the subjects to have active warrants for his arrest. As a result, 20-year old Melvin Arganbright of Salem, was arrested on three counts of failing to appear on warrants for traffic offenses. He was transported to the Dent County Jail and allowed to make a phone call to bond. On February 27th, deputies responded to the 13000 block of Highway 19 South for a domestic dispute. After a short investigation, 59-year old Alvaro Mattos of Salem was arrested and transported to the Dent County Jail. Mattos was charged with 2nd degree domestic assault and his bond is set at $7,000 cash only. All charges listed are just accusations and is not evidence of guilt. Evidence in support of these charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction whose duty it will be to determine their guilt or innocence.

Randall Grichuk was 2-2 with a homer and a double plus drove in four runs as the Cards beat the New York Mets, 6-1. Carlos Marinez went three innings to get the win. The Red Birds play Atlanta this afternoon at Jupiter.

The Kansas City Royals lost to the Chicago Cubs yesterday, 7-3 and they will play the Colorado Rockies this afternoon in Arizona.

Funeral services for Faith Peterman of St. James, age 80, and William “Elmer” Peterman of St. James, age 85, will be held at 11:00 this morning at the Greentree Christians Church in Rolla. Interment will be in the Asher Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Missouri Veteran’s Home and the St. James Caring Center. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of St. James.

Funeral services for Wilma M. Graham of Salem, age 81, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 Thursday morning. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Thela May (Plank) Cooksey of Salem, age 86, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Salem. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cooksey Cemetery in Dent County. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Rosemary Gillam of Steelville, age 82, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Czar Cemetery in Viburnum.

Private services for Richard Mannis of Salem, age 65, will be held at a later date. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 Monday at the James and Gahr Mortuary Salem Chapel. Memorials may be made to Mid-America Transplant.
