The 66th Annual Miss Salem Contest and Variety Show will be held this Saturday evening at 7:00 at the Salem City Hall Auditorium featuring twelve contestants. The Master of Ceremonies will be David Massengale with Cosmopolitan Club President Catherine Dent narrating. The contestants this year are Hayden Leach who is sponsored by Chilton Oil Company, Savannah Decker who will be sponsored by Ozark Dental, Lauren Grogan who is sponsored by Interstate Regional Stockyards, Makenna Farrar who will be sponsored by Parker Lawn and Land, Makinna Shalbot who is sponsored by P'Zaz, McKensi Moshier who is sponsored by The Looking Glass Salon, Brooke Shults who will be sponsored by Riverways Federal Credit Union, Ashley Sellers who is sponsored by Jessica Stokes for BeautiControl, Abigail Schafer who is sponsored by Pizza Inn, Allie Fleener who is sponsored by Mobray's Excavation, Trista Heavin who will be sponsored by Heavin Motors, and Baylee Bilyeu who is sponsored by Duncan Family Chiropractic. There will be several dance numbers directed by Linda Maledy and performed by students of all ages. The Upper Elementary Teachers and Friends will perform a comedy skit and a Zumba routine will be directed by Jackie Sisco. The Salem Middle School Students will be performing a skit and the Salem High School Drama Club will also have a presentation during the event. Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 for children, plus children 4 and under are free.

The Salem Police Department released reports involving theft, burglary, and suspicious persons. On Friday, February 17th at 8:45 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a stolen license plate. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a license plate from a green 1996 Chevrolet Blazer parked in the 700 block of South Pershing. Later that morning at 11:07, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 100 block of South Carty in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that a 32-year old male of Salem took a purse from the residence containing more than $11,000.00 in cash, fled the residence and left in a gold 2000 Infinity I30. On Sunday, February 19th the purse was located on Doss Road and returned, but the cash was missing. On Saturday, February 18th at 1:33 in the afternoon, an officer transported a 30-year old male of Cadet, Missouri from Washington County to Dent County in lieu of two active arrest warrants from the City of Salem. He was incarcerated pending a court appearance. Later that afternoon a 1:51, an officer investigated a suspicious person near Askins and Missouri Highway 32. As a result of the investigation a 41-year old male of Salem was arrested on active felony arrest warrants from Franklin County. He was taken in to custody and incarcerated pending extradition. Then at 6:21 in the evening an officer was detailed to a residence in the 1800 block of South Oak in reference to a burglary.  The investigation revealed someone entered a residence while residents were asleep and took cell phones and other items valued at $1,300. Captain James W. Remillard, the commanding officer of Troop I, announced that sometime during the month of March, troopers assigned to Troop I will be conducting a DWI saturation patrol in Phelps County. Troopers assigned to these special enforcement operations will patrol those highways where in the past a higher number of alcohol-related arrests and traffic crashes have occurred. Captain Remillard would like to remind motorists that they can report highway emergencies and serious traffic offenses to the nearest troop headquarters by dialing *55 on a cellular telephone.

The Jeff City Helias Crusaders outscored Salem 17-4 in the 2nd quarter to break open a 15-15 tie and beat the Tigers, 56-41 to eliminate Salem from district play. Logan Woolf scored 16 points and Jakob Happel added 11 more in the loss. Salem finished at 13-14 on the year.

Milan Lucic and Mark Letestu scored and Cam Talbot made 25 saves to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night. Paul Stastny scored for St. Louis and Jake Allen stopped 23 of 25 shots as St. Louis dropped its fourth straight game. The Blues will face the Winnipeg Jets Friday night.

St. Louis Blues President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced the Blues have acquired a 2017 first-round draft pick and a conditional second-round draft pick along with forward Zach Sanford from the Washington Capitals in exchange for defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk. In addition, the Blues acquired forward Brad Malone from Washington in exchange for goaltender Pheonix Copley. Shattenkirk, was going to become a free agent at the end of the year and was going to test the free agent market.

Tonny Trocha-Morelos scored 18 points on 6-for-9 shooting, helping Texas A&M defeated Missouri 60-43 Tuesday. Missouri is now 7-22 overall and 2-15 in the SEC Conference. The Tigers will be at Auburn Saturday afternoon at 2:00 and joined on KSMO after Cards Baseball.

The Atlanta Braves shutout the Cardinals, 2-0 in Grapefruit League play. The Cards drop to 3-2 in the pre-season and will play the New York Mets today.

The Kansas City Royals doubled up Milwaukee Tuesday, 6-3. The Royals will face the Chicago Cubs today.

Funeral services for Faith Peterman of St. James, age 80, and William “Elmer” Peterman of St. James, age 85, will be held at 11:00 Thursday morning at the Greentree Christians Church in Rolla. Visitation will be held today from 5:00-7:30 at the church. Interment will be in the Asher Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Missouri Veteran’s Home and the St. James Caring Center. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of St. James.

Funeral services for Wilma M. Graham of Salem, age 81, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 Thursday morning. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Thela May (Plank) Cooksey of Salem, age 86, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cooksey Cemetery in Dent County. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Rosemary Gillam of Steelville, age 82, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Czar Cemetery in Viburnum.

Private services for Richard Mannis of Salem, age 65, will be held at a later date. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 Monday at the James and Gahr Mortuary Salem Chapel. Memorials may be made to Mid-America Transplant.
