The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams was in attendance to get the Commissioners signatures on budget transfers from the Senior Citizen Fund. The transfer to the Salem Nutrition Site was for $12,500.00 and to SMTS was for $6,250.00. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said grading would be done on and materials would be added to Dent County Roads 5150, 5520 and 5530, while grading only would be done on county roads 2430 and 2400. Purcell added that brush would be cut on county road 6633. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson stated grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5280, 5300, 4060 and 2500. He went on to say that three men were hauling materials to county road 2500 as part of the Missouri Department of Conservation’s $30.000.00 expenditure. Dent County’s share of the expense is for trucking and labor. Larson added that his crew checked the Cooksey Cemetery prior to a recent funeral service and found that someone had disrespectfully dumped tires there, which the crew removed from the cemetery. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles noted that project boards and brochures about the jail proposal have been placed at numerous locations including all of Salem’s financial institutions, the library, SBU and Salem Community Center at the Armory. He noted that brochures were also available at MFA and as well as on line at salemmo.com. Skiles said that the Dent County Commission sincerely appreciates the opportunity to place information at these locations. He went on to say that public forums would be held March 16th and 30th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the Judicial Building Associate Court Room. He added that the architect, bond underwriter, sheriff and commissioners would be on hand to discuss the proposal. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she balanced with the treasurer on all accounts for the month of February. She went on to say that March 8th is the last day to register to vote in the April election and that bills were being reviewed and approved by the Commissioners. It was noted that fuel bids had been solicited by phone for 7,000 gallons of diesel and 1,000 gallons of gasoline. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Monday morning in the Courthouse and it is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 5:16 in the afternoon on Wednesday, February 8th on Highway 19 at 10th Street in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a 2001 Chevy CI-1500 driven by Shawn Sisler of Salem was traveling south on highway 19. Sisler failed to negotiate the curve and continued in a straight line, crossed the northbound lane of traffic and ran off the left side of the roadway. The Chevy continued about 157-feet in the ditch colliding with the concrete culvert. The Chevy was pulling a 1997 Trip 18-foot tandem axle trailer. Sisler sustained minor injuries and refused medical attention at the scene. A witness stated that she was traveling north on highway 19 and saw the vehicle crossing the northbound lane and it appeared the driver was asleep with his head slumped over. The Chevy sustained extensive damage while the trailer sustained minor damage.

Come to the Bonebrake Center of Nature and History tonight at 6:00 p.m. to experience views of the solar system and the galaxy. Joe Shuster and friends will be on site using powerful telescopes, including the Bonebrake Center’s kid/adult telescope, to show the mountains, plains, and craters on the crescent Moon. They will point out the planets Mars and Venus (in crescent mode, too!) in the western sky at the beginning of the event, and maybe catch a glimpse of a bright “Iridium Flare” as the sun reflects off an unmanned many of the constellations and stars of the winter sky, such as the Twins, Canis Major (with its bright star Sirius), Orion, Gemini, Taurus, and the star Rigel. Dress for the weather, bring personal binoculars or telescopes and experience a tour of the sky. This program is appropriate for the whole family and will be mostly outdoors, so come prepared for the night air. There will be access to the house and light snacks. The suggested donation is $1.00 per person or $5.00 for the whole family. Please leave a message at the Bonebrake Center (573.729.3400) or e-mail at bonebrakecenter@embarqmail.com and leave a message for more information.
