LOCAL NEWS:

The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning at the courthouse. Louis Nothaus was in attendance saying he was against prevailing wage on the proposed jail project and was thinking about voting against it for that reason. He said he will vote for the propositions because we need the jail. He also wanted to go on record as saying he is for “Right to Work” as well. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said workers would be out checking and cleaning culverts, replacing county road signs and picking up old tires and trash on the roads. He said Dump Truck #117 has an electrical problem that is being repaired and general shop maintenance will be performed. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said a crossover pipe would be installed and material will be hauled to Dent County Road 2270. Larson said work would be done on tractor #6 and crews will be cleaning out pipes and moving debris from low-water crossings. Priding Commissioner Darrel Skiles wants to remind voters that both Proposition 1 and 2 MUST pass in order for work on the jail to begin. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said the polls will be open from 6:00 this morning until 7:00 tonight. If you don’t know where you are supposed to vote or have changed addresses, call her office at 729-4144. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.

The ninth annual Missouri National Archery in the Schools Program (MoNASP) state tournament held March 25th and 26th in Branson drew 2,100 student archers in grades 4-12 from a record setting 127 schools across the state. Winning teams and individuals, along with other teams and individuals who had qualifying scores, will go on to compete in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) tournament in Louisville, Ky., on May 11-13. MoNASP is coordinated through the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Conservation Federation of Missouri in partnership with 620 participating schools and numerous supporting organizations throughout the state. More than 185,000 Missouri students in grades 4-12 participate in MoNASP. Salem Middle School seventh grader Irvin Johnson shot a 292 out of 300 which was the third best in the entire tournament and he took top honors in his age group. Congratulations to Irvin who will be going to the nationals.

The Missouri Department of Transportation reminds motorists of the importance of driving safely through work zones with the observance of National Work Zone Awareness Week now through the 7th. Spring signals the start of a busy season of construction and maintenance work on Missouri’s nearly 34,000 miles of state roads and bridges. Not all work zones look alike. Work zones can be moving operations, such as striping, patching or mowing. They can also be short term, temporary lane closures to make quick repairs or remove debris from the roadway. Driver inattention was the number one cause of work zone crashes last year. Motorists are reminded to slow down, put their phone down and pay attention as they drive past work zones. Traveling at 55 mph, you will travel more than the length of a football field—blindfolded. MoDOT’s slow moving maintenance operations move as slow as 10 mph and if you aren’t paying attention to the road, you will come up on the closed lane very quickly.  Any time highway workers are present on a Missouri roadway – whether it’s a long term lane closure, a moving operation, or shoulder work – your safety and the safety of those workers depends on drivers’ focus and attention. Since 2012, motorists are required to slow down and change lanes when approaching MoDOT vehicles, law enforcement or emergency vehicles with lights flashing. To help make your travel safer and to find out what work zones you may encounter, visit MoDOT’s Traveler Information map at traveler.modot.org/map.
