The Salem Park and Recreation Board met Tuesday evening at the Salem Community Center@The Armory. Park Board President Stan Podorski addressed the two grants the city has received including the TAP grant for the new trail at the city park and the LWCF grant for the All Accessible Playground. He reported and City Administrator Ray Walden concurred the city is waiting on MoDOT so all the engineers can meet to decide when to break ground. Board member Beth Atkinson provided a sample brochure on Billy’s Playground from Unlimited Play and also discussed fund raisers such as a chili supper and also a “penny drive” at the upper elementary school to include a zip line to the park which is not in the original plan. Podorski brought up that he discovered accessible outdoor workout equipment while in Florida that could be a nice addition to the park near the playgrounds. He did not have any price information and the board approved allowing him to look into adding that equipment to the park project through possible lease purchase financing. Parks and Recreation Director Tye Lydon prepared a field maintenance guide that would be used to set the criteria for the bid packet for field prep and care that was handed out to everyone in attendance. Podorski said bids would be sent out the first week of April to contractors. Lydon reported on the soccer program and said 191 players signed up with Town and Country Bank sponsoring the shirts. There are 84 children aged 4-6 who signed up plus 36 children 7-8 years old, 43 children 9-10 years of age and 28 youngsters 11-14 years old. Lydon discussed swim lessons this year and there will be three sessions: June 12th through the 23rd; July 10th through the 21st; and August 1st through the 11th. Last year, the lessons were $20 per person, but the board agreed to request an increase to $25 per person from the Board of Aldermen. Lydon said the pool would be open from noon until 7:00 Monday through Saturday and from 1:00 to 6:00 on Sunday. He also said water aerobics would be held weekdays from 11:00 until 12:00 noon at $2.00 per day or a monthly pass at $20. Lydon asked the board about rental fees for the use of the baseball and softball fields. It is currently $50 for Al Brown and the City Park fields which is good for all day use. The board approved allowing Lydon to check with other communities to see what they are charging to use their fields to establish a fair rate up to $250 per day. Lydon told the board the lighting circuit box has been replaced at Al Brown and the timer has been reset to go on from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Podorski reported there will be a new concession building placed at the bottom of the hill at Al Brown Fields between the fields, and that the current concession stand will be used for storage. With permission from Ray Walden, the roof will be replaced on that building. This is a budgeted expense. Director Lydon said baseball, softball and T-Ball signups would be held starting the week of April 3rd at the Salem Community Center, and signups for Kickball for adults would be held at the same time. He said a Saturday signup would be held on April 8th from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM at the Salem Community Center@The Armory for both sports for those who can’t make it in during the week. Podorski said Lydon was in the process of getting bids to replace the plumbing inside the pool house. The plumbing would be mounted on the block walls for easier access for repair rather than inside the block walls. Podorski said the 50 tree project the SACBA member Joyce Bradley discussed would not be done this year with the expected new construction, but SACBA would be enhancing areas where flowers had been and where some trees use to be. She did say three new trees could be put on the south side of T-ball Field 1 for some shade. Lydon reported the Volunteers for America from the American Legion will be cleaning the stream this Saturday in the city park. Podorski was given permission to investigate getting a pre-fab bridge for access to the soccer field from the front parking lot on Highway 19 south from the board. Trimming eliminators may be bought and installed at the Al Brown Field within budgetary limits. The meeting was then adjourned.
