The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors met for the regular meeting Tuesday evening at the hospital library. Chief Financial Officer Monica Gargus gave the summary of operations for February that showed a gain from operations of $346,918 and an excess of revenues over expenses of $364,963. Inpatient admissions, census days, ER visits and outpatient registrations were all up and way over budget, plus the health fair was also held in February. The cash flow statement showed a gain in cash of $395,295 for the month with days in accounts receivable at 56. Currently the hospital has available cash to cover 85 days of operation. Chief Nursing Officer Debbie Hines reported during the month there were 91 acute care admissions with 365 census days and 871 emergency room visits with an average turnaround time of 138 minutes. Also during the month, there were 207 ambulance runs with 172 patients being transported to the hospital, 31 surgery cases, 2,144 outpatient registrations, 222 home health visits, 10,682 lab tests, 1,160 radiological procedures, 20 CT scans, 40 MRI scans, 8 nuclear med scans, 685 rehab treatments, 148 dialysis treatments and 293 clinical visits. The SMDH Foundation will have a fund raising golf tournament event on May 5th at the Spring Creek Golf Club. The SMDH Auxiliary will have a Scrub Hub on March 31st at the hospital campus and a Shoe Road Production on May 3rd at the hospital library. Three more fundraisers will be held in the fall. Board member George Greundel reported on the Healthy Dent County Prevention Coalition meeting saying it was very good concentrating on addressing the drug and alcohol problem in Dent County. Hospital Administrator Kasey Lucas reported on the hospital retirement plan and the number of participants has doubled since they made the switch to OneAmerica. Lucas discussed the Finance Committee meeting and that they approved the market assessment and reviewed the capital budget. Lucas said they will review what the hospital needs to make sure that equipment is updated even if it means using more than just tax revenues the hospital has always used to purchase new equipment, including general revenue. Lucas also discussed an offer by the City of Salem to provide sewer service to the hospital and the Seville Care Center. They estimated the cost to the hospital at about $1,000 a month. The board questioned why they would do that as they currently have a lagoon, but two board members feared that one day DNR may change what is required and the hospital’s lagoon will be out of compliance. Lucas said he would try to get Jeff Meadows from Archer Engineering and a city representative to come to the next meeting to explain. He also stated he is looking for USDA grants to possibly help pay for a new roof and also a new generator. The board approved the purchase of three Zoll defibrillators, one for the Emergency Room and two for Acute Care for $49,344. They also approved the unbudgeted purchase of an Emergency Department replacement stretcher from Stryker for $5,134 and four vital sign monitors from Medline for $7,384. Two will be replacements and two will be additional monitors. The board then went into closed session.
