The City of Salem Board of Alderman held their meeting Monday night. During the hearing of persons, John Hambacker expressed his concerns as to how the city is charging utility customers. In a lengthy presentation, he was concerned about a 34.64% water loss to the city. As an example, he estimated that there are about 370 different residences, comprised of multiple rental units, that have just a few meters, instead a water meter per each unit. He figured the loss of revenue from that setup is at about $54,000 each year. He also brought up the fact that sewer rates are very low and the revenue from an increase in conjunction with the additional meters based on water usage, would help to offset the cost of the updates to the Waste Water Treatment Plant. Hambacker felt that another meeting of the utility committee, a much more in-depth meeting, was in order. City Administrator Ray Walden requested authorization to draft a request for a proposal of what the city would like to do with the city-owned middle school building, which was approved by the Board. He then stated that the city will be enforcing ordinances regarding inoperable and unlicensed vehicles abandoned on private property within the city limits. Walden stated that the city will be conducting phone interviews this week with candidates to fill the economic development position. He also wanted to thank those who volunteered and helped to make the 100-Acre Wood Road Rally a success this past weekend. Waste Management requested that the Spring Clean-Up weeks be held May 1st and May 8th, the week before and the week after the City Wide Yard Sale and the Board unanimously approved that request. The City of Salem Board of Alderman then voted to go into closed session.
The Salem Public Library has been awarded an LSTS Technology Mini Grant of $11,588. It is a 25/75 match grant. This grant permits the library to make much-needed upgrades in technology utilized by staff and patrons including two new circulation computers, three new computers for patron use, four new patron computers to replace existing outdated ones, one new office computer, two new ADA computer desks, time management software, SonicWall and Sonicpoints, a firewall as well as WordPerfect Office for management use. This project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
The Salem R-80 Board of Education voted to go into closed session after their regular March meeting Thursday evening to discuss personnel and real estate. In closed session the Salem R-80 Board of Education voted to hire the following for school activities. They hired Alec Conner for High School Drama, Will Hubbs for the High School Quiz Bowl, Robin Taylor for High School Yearbook, Amy Halinar for Upper Elementary Yearbook, Lisa Jadwin for William Lynch Yearbook, Elaine Russell for High School Music, David Schatz for High School Band and Color Guard, Susan Sheeley for High School Quiz Bowl, Robyn Taylor for High School Head Junior Class Sponsor, Lori Beasley for Assistant Band Director, and Kriste Crocker for Federal Programs Coordinator. The Board also voted to hire Brian McNamee for Head Varsity Football, Tony Edwards for Assistant Varsity Football, Conrad Prugh for Assistant Varsity Football, Kyle Anderson for Assistant Varsity Football, Derek Freeman for Middle School Football, Dustin Bell for Middle School Football, Don Smith for Head Softball, Elizabeth Hogan for Winter Cheerleading, Joni Bobbitt for Middle School Cheerleading, Amanda Walker as Head Volleyball, Jake Reardon as Middle School Girls’ Basketball, Conrad Prugh as Head Boys’ Basketball, Jared Patterson as Assistant Boys’ Basketball, Kyle Anderson for 9th grade Boys’ Basketball, Chris Kamprath for Middle School Boys’ Basketball, Matt Kamprath for Middle School Boys’ Basketball, Jake Reardon for Head Girls’ Basketball, Brian McNamee for Head Track Coach, Jared Patterson for Assistant Track, Jillian Doddema for Assistant Track, Derek Freeman for Assistant Track, Phillip Karr for Head Baseball, Tony Edwards for Assistant Baseball, Jake Reardon for Assistant Baseball, Will Hubbs for Head Tennis, Kyle Anderson for Golf, and Phillip Karr for Athletic Director. The Board also voted to hire Jody Heavin for Fall cheerleading, and Natalie Sellers for Assistant Girls’ basketball and Assistant track. Other teachers hired were Jessica Duehning for High School math, Tracy Leathers for High School math, Kara Lafon for High School Spanish, Aubrey Enloe for Middle School English, Julie Dunn for Early Childhood Special Education, and Kaylie Jay as District Speech Language Pathologist. The Board hired nine probationary teachers for William Lynch Elementary, 11 probationary teachers for the Upper Elementary, nine probationary teachers at the Middle School, and 11 probationary teachers for the High School. The Board also voted to approve the purchase of the old James and Gahr Mortuary parking lot for William Lynch Elementary for $34,500. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Salem Tigers baseball game with Cuba Tuesday was postponed due to wet grounds at Houston and will be made up Thursday as a doubleheader with Cuba at 4:00 and Licking at 6:30 at Houston. Tonight, the Salem Tigers will face the Mountain Grove Panthers at 6:30 in the Houston Tournament.
The Cardinals were off Tuesday and will face Washington this afternoon in spring training. The Cardinals are 14-7 this spring.
The Kansas City Royals dropped a 4-2 decision to the Arizona Diamondbacks in Cactus League play. The Royals will take on the San Diego Padres today. The Royals are 12-12 this spring.
Magnus Paajarvi scored the tie-breaking goal early in the third period, Jordan Schwartz added to the lead later in the frame, and the St. Louis Blues stayed hot with a 4-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday. The Blues have moved into a tie with Nashville for third in the Central Division with 83 points each.

Funeral services for Russell Burke Feeler of Vienna, age 86, will be this morning at 10:30 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rolla. Interment will be in the Jefferson Barracks Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials are suggested to the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rolla. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Funeral services for Joseph Sutton of Salem, age 25, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Sutton family for burial expenses.
Funeral services for Susan Cary Gargus of St. James, age 68, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time Sunday. Interment will be in the Keysville Cemetery in Keysville, MO.
Funeral services for Clellia June Ellerman of Salem, age 82, will be held Monday at 10:30 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
