An accident occurred at 3:05 in the afternoon on Saturday, March 18th on Highway NN one mile west in Highway F in Dent County. According to the highway patrol report, a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer driven by 16-year old Konner Ousley of Salem was traveling around a curve when he lost control of the vehicle. He ran off the roadway, began to overturn, and struck a fence before coming to rest. Ousley suffered serious injuries while passengers, 17-year old Aaron Land suffered minor injuries and 16-year old Gavyn Williams suffered moderate injuries.  All three were transported to Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem EMS. No one was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet was totaled and towed by Whitakers Towing.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their March meeting Thursday evening the district administrative offices boardroom. Superintendent John McColloch stated that summer school 2017 would begin on May 30th and run for 14 days ending June 16th. Summer School is available to students entering Kindergarten through 6th grade next year; also credit recovery is available for students grades 7-12, who qualify and one session of drivers’ education is available. McColloch informed the Board of different insurance plans and rates for the 2017-2018 school year and he then presented the Board with information concerning a year-to-date comparison with last year as it relates to revenue and expenditures.  He reported that the district transportation department received a 100% on its recent bus inspection by the Missouri Highway Patrol. The William Lynch Elementary reported that preschool registration will be held May 22nd and May 23rd. Parents interested in the program should call William Lynch at 729-6611 for an appointment. Children that will be three by August1, 2017 are eligible for preschool. Kindergarten registration will be March 21st and March 22nd. Parents of incoming kindergartners should call the office to schedule an appointment and children must be five by August 1, 2017 to be eligible for kindergarten. William Lynch is considering a new program for incoming kindergarten in response to a growing population of students who need intervention to prepare them for school. Students at the Upper Elementary participated in the Pennies for Patients campaign that ended February 24th and the students raised a total of $892.95. Upper Elementary students are currently participating in the Jump Rope for Hearts campaign and they are trying to earn enough money to do the Egg Challenge. McTeacher Night was held March 14th at the Salem McDonald’s in support of Middle School PBS. Students and staff worked from 4:00 to 8:00 and raised a little over $500. The Middle School Archery will compete in the state tournament on March 24th & 25th in Branson. Congratulations go to Connor Pilkington, Dawson Sanders, Kelbey Parker and Caden Camden for their selection to participate in the Youth Capital Art Show in Jefferson City. MS Special Olympics Basketball Athletes Zach Meyer and Savannah Skaggs both received medals for their accomplishments for outstanding athleticism at the Laquey Basketball Tournament on March 8th. The Board then voted to set the organizational meeting and April meeting for Thursday, April 13th beginning at 6:00 pm. The Board voted to approve the MSBA Policy Service Agreement. A bus lease with Midwest Bus Sales for three-year leases of two busses for $13,750 annually was approved by the Board. The Board then voted to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel and real estate.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their regular meeting on tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 pm. During the hearing of persons, John Hambacker would like to discuss with the Board the cost at the Sewer Treatment Plant. City Administrator Ray Walden will then update the Board on various items and projects concerning the City of Salem followed by a report by Mayor Brad Nash. In new and miscellaneous business, Waste Management would like the Board’s approval to set the Spring Clean-Up weeks of May 1st and May 8th. This would be the week before and the week after the City Wide Yard Sale. The Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing contracts and real estate. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released repots involving theft and a shoplifter. On Saturday, March 11th at 5:53 in the evening, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took items valued)$3,500 from a Show Me Storage, storage unit located in the 800 block of West International. On Sunday, March 12at at 6:38 in the evening, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The report led to the arrest of a 21-year old male of Rolla for stealing merchandise valued $28. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Monday, March 13th at 6:08 in the evening, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took property valued $240 from a residence in the 100 block of East Tenth.  Later that same evening at 6:43, an officer located a 27-year old female of Salem in the 100 block of West Fourth who had an active arrest warrant from the State of Missouri. She was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending a court appearance. Salem High School Varsity Track will start their season off today at the Rolla Open House beginning at 3:30 this afternoon.

The St. Louis Cardinals lost to the New York Mets Saturday afternoon 5-4. Cards then come back Sunday afternoon and won out 5-2 over the Atlanta Braves. Cards are scheduled to take on the Houston Astros at 5:05 this afternoon.

The Kansas City Royals tied Saturday afternoon 4-4 with the Cleveland Indians. The Royals will play the Cincinnati Reds this afternoon at 3:05.

The St. Louis Blues were already on a roll when they arrived in Arizona. Alex Pietrangelo, Scottie Upshall and David Perron scored and Jake Allen made 31 saves for his fourth shutout this season as St. Louis beat the Arizona Coyotes 3-0 on Saturday.  Allen’s 15th shutout ranked him fourth in the team history. The Blues will be back in action Tuesday night as they will be in Colorado taking on the Avalanche beginning with the pre-game at 7:30 pm on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for Bill Fink of Salem, age 93, will be held today at 1:00 at the First Baptist Church in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Lake Springs Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Moldova Missions and/or Sons of the American Legion Adopt a Vet Program. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary.

Funeral services for Russell Burke Feeler of Vienna, age 86, will be held Wednesday at 10:30 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church. Visitation will Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:30 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Jefferson Barracks Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials are suggested to the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rolla.

Funeral services for Joseph Sutton of Salem, age 25, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Sutton family for burial expenses.
