The Dent County Commissioners met Monday for their regular meeting at the courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said parts of southern Dent County received about two inches of snow Sunday night, but no road problems had been reported. He said a work crew would be out replacing county road signs while another crew would be removing two downed trees on Dent County Road 6280. Purcell went on to say workers would be servicing truck #123 and also replacing a radiator pipe on truck #117. Purcell said he received a report of trash dumped on Dent County Road 5015. There were ten bags of trash and two 5-gallon containers left. Purcell said the work crews will have to clean this up and he hopes taxpayers understand that this takes away from road work that could be done. If you see someone dumping trash or stealing road signs, please contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Office at 729-3241. Purcell wanted to remind everyone the 100-Acre in the Woods Road Rally would be this Friday and Saturday in Dent County. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 2210 while materials would be added to county roads 2150 and 3190. He also mentioned a crew would be working on truck #116 replacing the air lines as well as doing shop maintenance. Larson said he attended the MRDC meeting on Friday where they discussed by-law changes and contract issues. Presiding Commissioner Darrel Skiles reported he was at the MRPC meeting Thursday and heard a good program from Alex Blackwell who is the Executive Director of the Missouri Workforce Development Central Region Career Center about jobs in the area. For more information, call 573-364-7030 or 426-2946 or drop by 706 South Bishop. He also said the public informational hearing and open house on the proposed jail project will be Thursday night from 6:00 to 8:00 in the Judicial Building. People can come by anytime between 6:00 to 8:00 if they would like to visit the jail. Tom Haines from the US Forest Service was in to ask the county when the next trailer was coming through to collect tires. He said they have had to pick up numerous tires that have been tossed in the forest. Skiles said there needs to be about 600 tires collected between the city, county and forest service, before the county would ask for a trailer. But the program that was used to collect the tires is no longer available through DNR. At 10:00, Elaine Welch, Shane Anselm, Mike Swyers from the St. Louis – Kansas City Carpenters Regional Council were in attendance to discuss the positive impacts the prevailing wage provides to the different regions of the state to local sales tax dollars, resident incomes and economic costs. The study was done by department of Economics from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. The study was funded by the Committee to Protect MO Families. They said that prevailing wage only affects public works projects and the labor part makes up about 20-23% of the cost. Presiding Commissioner Skiles related that according to the engineering firm, if prevailing wage is overruns and delays in completion. When asked if any contractors in Dent County contribute the voluntary information needed to calculate the prevailing wage for this county, they did not know of any. Elaine, Mike and Shane were also asked what happens to the economic benefit for the region when out of town contractors come in and do not subcontract to local contractors due to insurance or bonding requirements they could not meet when it was time to bid. That means Dent County taxpayer money leaves the southeast region and goes into a different region, such as the St. Louis region, to pay their workers, not local workers. There was no response except to say those contractors should do what they need to do to meet what was required in order to bid. There currently is talk in the Senate to eliminate or adjust the Prevailing Wage. At the last meeting, Commissioner Skiles signed the Contract for Services for the Department of Social Services Child Support along with the Prosecutor and Circuit Clerk. The next meeting of the commissioners will be Thursday morning at the courthouse and it is open to the public.
