The Dent County Commission met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. Presiding Commissioner Darrel Skiles was not able to attend, so Dent County Clerk Angie Curley appointed District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell to act as Presiding Commissioner. In the road report, Purcell stated grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2400, 2410, 5110, 5525, 6050 and 6255. He said materials would be added to county road 6180 and brush was being cut on Dent County Road 6600. Purcell did say that he received from Kurt Faigle from the 100-Acre Wood Road Rally their Certificate of Liability Insurance. The rally this year will be held March 17th and 18th. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2520 and 4337, while materials would be added and grading done on Dent County Road 4480. He also said rock would be added to county road 2540 and one man would be screening brown rock. Clerk Curley reported that absentee voting for the April election continues and the last day to register to vote for the April 4th election will be Wednesday, March 8th. She also said to make sure you know your proper polling location. You can do so by calling her office at 729-4144 or by going online to salemmo.com and clicking on the County Clerk tab. At the bottom of the page, you can click on the secretary of State’s website where you can find you polling place by going to the “Elections and Voting” tab and on the “Find you Polling Place” tab. Jerry Lough was in attendance to ask what the county government has to do with the operations of the Public Administrator’s office. At the last meeting, the commission approved phone fuel bids. Phil-Mart received the diesel bid for $1.72 per gallon and MFA received the gas bid for $1.87.6.The other bidder was County Fuels. The commission also voted to seek bids on two used pickups for the county. They are looking for trucks between the years of 2010-2013 that are 4X4, that are either ¾ ton or ½ ton pickups. Anyone can submit a sealed bid and they will be due by March 16th at 12:00 noon. Please write on the envelope “Truck Bid” when mailing it in or dropping it off so that it will not be opened prior to that date. The next meeting of the commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The annual Missouri and Illinois Statewide Severe Weather Drill will be conducted this morning at 10:00. The City of Salem will be testing their emergency weather sirens in conjunction with the national test. In case of inclement weather, the backup day is Thursday, March 9th at 10:00 in the morning. While everyone is encouraged to participate by reviewing your severe weather plans at the time of the drill, if the date and time does not work for you, conduct a drill at a better time for you.

The Dent County Health Center Board of Trustees held their regular meeting on Monday, February 27th at the Health Center. Administrator Kendra Mobray reported the Health Center is half way through the "Billion Steps Challenge" and Dent County has reported over 43 million steps thus far. The health center is excited to report they have received national recognition from the American Public Health Association for being the only local public health agency that engaged their community in the step challenge. The Dent County Health Center participated in the recent health expo and began registrations for the upcoming "Walk, Waddle, or Run 5K" on April 1st. Registration for the 5K is $15; participants will receive a t-shirt, water bottle, and snacks after the race. Mobray provided a copy of the 2016 Dent County Health Center Annual Report to the Board Members. This is a summary of all services provided by the Health Center during the previous year. These reports are available to the public by request at the Health Center during office hours. Mobray reported that Marissa Sellers attended and successfully completed a required breastfeeding training February 21-23 for WIC. She said the "Get Fit in Dent County" placemats are complete and available at the Health Center at no cost. Placemats include a map of available healthy resources in Dent County such as walking/hiking trails, fresh produce, physical activities and more. It was also noted that Joan Raulston and Mobray will complete the "Choosing the Best" curriculum for R-3, R-4, and R-80. R-1 and R-2 began their curriculum last week. Influenza activity in Missouri remains widespread. The nurses at the Health Center encourage individuals to stay home if you have a fever and would also like to remind everyone that hand-washing is the most effective way to reduce the spread of illness. Mobray reported that in the last month, the communicable disease nurse has followed up on one suspected mumps case and one Salmonellosis in Dent County. The next regular board meeting date was set for Monday, March 20th at 5:00 and the meeting adjourned.

The Minnesota Twins pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning off Ryan Sheriff and beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 2-1. Stephen Piscotty had a double and Kolten Wong had the only RBI for the Cardinals who had seven scattered hits in the game. The Red Birds will play the Miami Marlins today.

The Arizona Diamondbacks scored two runs in the 4th and 6th innings en route to a 4-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals.  Alex Gordon scored the only Royals run. Kansas City will face the Cincinnati Reeds today in Arizona.

The St. Louis Blues will be at Minnesota tonight to face the Wild starting at 6:30 with the pre-game show on KSMO. The Blues, who just ended a five-game losing streak, play at 7:00.

Missouri Basketball Coach Kim Anderson was asked to step down as men’s basketball coach after the Tigers’ final game this year. At Mizzou, Anderson’s teams put up a 26-67 record, including 8-46 in the Southeastern Conference, which is just a .148 win percentage.

Funeral services for Dorothy M. Lowe of Salem, age 77, will be held today at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Gladden Empire Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Faith Mission.

Funeral services for William Eugene “Bill” Shelton of Salem, age 88, will be Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Love Pack Back Pack Program.

A Memorial service for Mary Lou Cotner of Salem, age 89, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 9:00 until service time Friday morning. Memorials may be made to the Salem Public Library.

Funeral services for Harvey Ryno of Licking, age 85, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Visitation Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00.

Funeral services for Montie Ray Asher of Bixby, age 78, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Trolinger Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Trolinger Cemetery.

Funeral services for John Lee Bell of Steelville, age 79, will be Saturday morning at 10:30 at the Wilson Mortuary Viburnum Chapel. Visitation will be from 9:30 Saturday morning until time of service. Interment will be in the Czar Cemetery.
