The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their December meeting Thursday evening. After approval of the agenda and communications, Superintendent John McColloch updated the Board on the election filings for two seats, currently held by Bernie Sirois and Dustin Howard. Incumbents Sirois and Howard have both filed for reelection to-date. McColloch then wanted to thank the Cox Foundation for a $30,000 donation that will be used for material and supplies for the 1st grade at William Lynch. And Salem R-80 also received a $10,000 Safe Schools Grant that will be used to purchase new security cameras for William Lynch and the Upper Elementary. Doug Walters and Carilee Ball were in to inform the Board about the Bright Future program. The program is a community and school partnership and they would like the Board’s approval before proceeding. Kristy Crocker reported that 11 families were provided with Christmas presents through donations by the William Lynch Elementary staff and community members. Over 300 canned goods through the Sakelaris Ford Fill-A-Ford Food Drive were collected and for the first year they participated in the Scholastic PJ Drive which provides pajamas to families and children and the school collected 62 pair. At the Salem Upper Elementary Melanie Wisdom reported at last count, they had collected 741 cans of food for the Fill-A-Ford campaign. They also participated in the Pennies for Produce and raised $650 plus a matching grant was awarded to make it a grand total of $1,300. The donations went to the Sheppard’s Nook to purchase produce for Christmas baskets. At the Salem Middle School Scott Roberts sent out a big thank you to the Salem Middle School Beta Club members for the Adopt-A-Family For Christmas project. Money raised through the sale of beef jerky helped two families and provided 11 backpacks to students in need. Roberts also wanted to thank Cameron Erway of State Farm for the five-hour personal finance program for the 8th graders. High School Principal Marty Anderson then recognized Natalie Leathers and Sydney Wood for their All-State Choir awards. Angela Barnes then presented to the Board the procedures that she goes through to help prepare Salem R-80 High School students for ACT tests throughout the year. Principal Anderson and Assistant Principal Clay Moody then updated the Board with an attendance policy flow chart and changes that will be made to the current attendance policy that were presented to the Board to better help students achieve the best education possible. The MSBA Belcher Scholarship recipient named was Merlin Toman and the Board then approved the property and liability insurance renewal with MUSIC. The Board also accepted the resignation of Tammy Wisdom as of June 30, 2016. The Board then voted to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The meeting was then adjourned.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 PM. After approval of the agenda and during bids, the City of Salem had requested sealed bids for a 2016 Ford F-150 4X4, 2016 Ford Police Interceptor Utility AWD and a 2016 Dodge Charger pursuit All-Wheel Drive Sedan. Three bids were received they and will be presented to the Board. City Administrator Ray Walden will update the Board on various projects around town, followed by a report by Mayor J.J. Tune. In the introduction and reading of bills and resolutions, Bill #3309, would create an ordinance that is required to make the budget adjustment the Board approved at the last meeting will be presented for approval. The meeting will then adjourn. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released reports involving assault, utility theft, a shoplifter, and traffic violations. On Thursday, December 10th at 7:10 PM, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to an assault. The investigation of the report revealed a 24-year old Salem male had assaulted a 24-year old Salem male with a tire tool causing injuries to the victim near the 1200 block of North Jackson. At 9:40 that same night, an officer transported a 25-year old male of Licking from the Texas County Sheriff's Department to the Dent County Jail in lieu of an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. He was incarcerated pending a court appearance. On Friday, December 11th at 12:30 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 400 block of East First in reference to utility theft. That investigation revealed a person or persons unknown had reconnected electricity to a residence after it had been shut off. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Two Salem Football Tigers were named to the All-State Second Team for Class 3 from the Missouri State Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. Senior Austin Reed was named to the Second Team on the Offensive Line while Junior Eli Floyd was named to the Second Team as a Defensive Back. Congratulations Tigers!!!!

Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and two assists, lifting the St. Louis Blues to a 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames. Colton Parayko and Jori Lehtera also scored and Brian Elliott made 36 saves for the Blues (20-10-4), who have won three straight. The Blues will be in Philadelphia tonight to face the Flyers starting at 5:30 on KSMO.

Cat Barber scored 33 points and grabbed seven rebounds as North Carolina State handed Missouri it's first home loss, beating the Tigers 73-59 Saturday night. Cullen VanLeer led Missouri with 12 points, shooting 4 of 7 from 3-point range. Tramaine Isabell added 10 points while Terrence Phillips and Wes Clark each scored seven. Missouri is now 5-5 and they will face Illinois Wednesday at Scottrade Center in the Bragging Rights game at 5:30.

The Kansas City Chiefs capitalized on a variety of miscues by the Baltimore Ravens and extended their winning streak to eight games with a 34-14 victory Sunday. Tyvon Branch returned a fumble 73 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and Marcus Peters clinched the victory with a 90-yard interception return for a score with 4:36 left. With the victory, the Chiefs became the first team in NFL history to follow a five-game skid with eight successive wins in the same season. Kansas City kept itself in the thick of the AFC playoff picture with a 9-5 record.

OBITUARIES     [TOP]

Funeral services for Vonica Estelle McGrath of Salem, age 50, will be held today at 12:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Bunker Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family of Vonica McGrath.

Memorial services for John “Jack” Isaac McCracken, of Salem, age 77, will be held and the time will be announced. In lieu of flowers cares and letters for the family can be mailed to the New Harmony Church in Salem. Cremation services are under the direction of the Rolla Cremation and Memorial.

Services for Michelle Davenport of Salem, age 48, are incomplete at this time. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
