An accident happened Monday evening at 5:25 in Dent County on Highway 19 about 3 ½ miles north of Salem that took the life of a woman from Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2015 Buick Encore driven northbound by 60-year old Joan Humphrey of Salem, crossed the centerline and struck a 2011 Ford E-450 U-Haul Truck driven southbound by 35-year old Bryan Smith of St. Charles. The Buick then traveled off the right side of the roadway and overturned. Humphrey was pronounced dead the scene by Dent County Sheriff Rick Stallings at 6:06 in the evening. Her body was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Smith suffered minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene. Humphrey was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident while Smith was. The Buick was totaled in the accident while the Ford U-Haul Truck sustained extensive damage. Both vehicles were removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. The Missouri State Highway Patrol was assisted by the Dent County Sheriff’s Department, the Dent County Fire Protection District, and the Salem Police Department.

An accident happened on Highway 60 about east of Cabool Sunday evening at 5:45. According to the highway patrol report, a 2014 Freightliner driven southbound by 58-year old David Jones of Salem, pulled into the path of a 2005 Chevy Malibu driven eastbound by Lynn Larson of Cabool. The Malibu then hit the Freightliner in the front passenger side door. David Jones suffered minor injuries and was transported by an ambulance to the Mercy Hospital in Mountain View. The Freightliner was driven from the scene with minor damage while the Malibu sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Mike Jones of Cabool.

An accident occurred at 8:39 PM on Tuesday, December 1st at the intersection of Pershing and Fourth Streets in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT driven by Dalton Washburn and owned by Dusty Halbrook, both of Salem, was traveling east on Fourth Street at a high rate of speed in the westbound lane of traffic. A witness to the incident stated the Mitsubishi appeared to be racing another vehicle. Washburn applied the brakes to make the turn at Pershing. The Mitsubishi left 252 feet of skids before impacting the curb unable to make the turn. The Mitsubishi continued skidding and impacting an embankment and then continued another 46 feet before stopping. Washburn began backing and collided with a utility pole where the Mitsubishi came to rest. A passenger in the vehicle had minor injuries and the Mitsubishi was towed from the scene.

Tuesday was the first day candidates for school boards, the hospital board, and the races for East and West Aldermanic seats for the City of Salem as well Mayor could file. For the City of Salem East Ward Aldermanic seat currently held by Ryan Whitaker, two people have signed up: Kim Shelton and Jerry (Jay) Gibbs, Jr. Persons can file through January 19th.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released reports. On December 6th, deputies conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Center and Water Streets in Salem. The stop revealed that the driver, later identified as Robert Nussbickel had a suspended driver’s license. Nussbickel was arrested without incident and later released on a summons to appear in court. Deputies also conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Henderson and Third Streets in Salem. The stop revealed that the driver, later identified as Tylor Land had a suspended driver’s license. Land was arrested without incident and later released on a summons to appear in court. Deputies also conducted a “knock and talk” narcotics investigation in the 100 block of East Third. As a result, John Cotner Jr was arrested. Cotner was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Saturday, December 12th at 8:00 AM, deputies responded to the 500 block of County Road 5160 in reference to a burglary. Numerous items from a shed located on the property had been stolen and the investigation continues. Anyone with any information regarding the burglary is asked to call the Dent County Sheriff’s Department at 729-3241.

The 2015 Trees & Trains 10th Anniversary exhibit is going on at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center. You will find a Trees and Trains 10th Anniversary decorative ornament available for sale for just $6 that will benefit the ONCRC. The Trees and Trains Exhibit will be open through December 24th and admission is free. Tomorrow night at 7:00, come out and enjoy a performance by the Oak Grove Baptist Church Children’s Choir. You’ll see an incredible collection of decorated Christmas Trees and a host of model trains displays. Don’t forget Santa will be in his workshop Saturday from noon until 5:00 both days.

The Rolla Bulldogs defeated the Salem Tigers Tuesday night in Rolla with a solid game by the score of 87-69. Sam Marshall led the Bulldogs with 17 points and seven rebounds while Antonio Quick netted 21 points for Salem. The Tigers are 4-2 on the year and they will host the Licking Wildcats Thursday night.

Paul Stastny netted the game winner with 3:38 left in the game as the Blues came from behind to beat Winnipeg, 4-3. Alexander Steen and Vladimir Tarasenko each had a goal and two assists for St. Louis who will host Nashville Thursday night at 7:00.

Funeral services for Scott Gott of Salem, age 47, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem with Full Military Honors. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time on Thursday. Interment will be at a later date.

Funeral services for Ernestine Laverne Wells of St. Louis, age 75, will be Thursday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 to the service time of 1:00. Interment will be on the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or a charity of your choice.

Funeral services for Jewell Young Medley of Salem, age 88, will be held Friday at 12:00 at the Grace Community Church. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. All the funeral arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Joan Inman Humphrey of Salem, age 60, will be held Friday at 12:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dry Fork Cemetery.

Funeral services for Dosia Ailene (Dotson) Stricklin, age 78, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church with visitation from 9:00 until service time Friday. Visitation will also be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Dotson Cemetery in Bixby. Memorials are suggested to the Dosia Stricklin Trust.
