The Dent County Toy Drive is going on now and they are still looking for donations of new and gently used toys from the general public. Your donation of toys or money to purchase toys can help provide less fortunate children with a memorable Christmas. Toys or cash donations can be left at the Dent County Fire Protection District Firehouse, KSMO Radio studios and also at the Salem Community Center @ The Armory. Your contributions last year helped the program serve over 200 children in Dent County. TODAY is the last day parents can signup your children at the Dent County Fire House from 3:00 to 6:00. The toys will be distributed on Monday, December 21st.

Don’t forget that Wal-Mart and The Salvation Army have joined together again this holiday season to create their “Angel Tree” that includes the names and ages of children in our community that need Christmas gifts. Shoppers can now adopt an angel from the tree by selecting a tag that represents a specific child.  It is preferred that you shop for the gifts based on the parent’s suggestions, but you do not have to purchase everything on the tag as this is just a guideline. Bring the unwrapped gifts to the Wal-Mart Service Desk along with the angel tag by Saturday, December 19th. Gifts will be distributed to your adopted “angel” Monday, December 21st. Again, TODAY is the last day parents can submit an application for their child for the “Angel Tree.” Those signups are also at Dent County Fire Department from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. For questions about the “Angel Tree,” please contact the Salvation Army at 729-8163.

The Missouri School Boards’ Association through its Missouri Center for Education Safety (CES) is pleased to announce the Salem R-80 School District has been awarded a school safety grant in the amount of $10,000. The funds will be used by the district to upgrade security equipment at Salem Upper Elementary and William Lynch Elementary. The district competed with other public schools in the state for a limited amount of funding, which is aimed at enhancing school safety in local school districts.  The funding for this initiative was made possible through a legislative appropriation to the Department of Elementary & Secondary Education and that is being administered by MSBA through CES, which is the state’s school safety center.  The CES provides comprehensive support to all schools in Missouri, through training, technical assistance, and other safety related initiatives. The Missouri School Boards’ Association is a private, not-for-profit organization that exists to help school boards succeed.
