The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 PM. After approval of the agenda and during reports, City Administrator Ray Walden will update the Board on various items and projects regarding the City of Salem, followed by a report by Mayor J.J. Tune. During the introduction and reading of bills and resolutions, Bill #3308, an ordinance providing for submission of a proposal to discontinue application and collection of the local sales tax on the titling of motor vehicles, trailers, boats and outboard motors that were purchased from a source other than a licensed Missouri dealer to the qualified voters of the City of Salem, will be presented to the Board for their approval. Also to be presented are Resolution 2-2015 authorizing the Mayor to execute an agreement between the City of Salem and Cintas for uniform rental service. and Resolution 3-2015 providing for the municipal election for the City of Salem to be held on April 5, 2016 to elect one east ward and one west ward alderman as well as Mayor. In new and miscellaneous business, Police Chief Steelman wishes to inform the Board of the destruction of old records of the Salem Police Department, as suggested in the Police Clerks Records Retention Schedule manual. The Board then should discuss the setting of the salaries for the newly elected officials before the filing date of December 8, 2015. City Administrator Walden will then request additional surface material for the playground at an estimated cost of $21,161.60 to come from the half cent capital improvement sales tax fund. The Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing real estate. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

This past Sunday, December 6th was National Miners Day, a day designated by the US Congress to honor American mine workers. Mineral mining, which includes copper, zinc and lead, supports 1.3 million U.S. jobs by directly employing 433,000 people, and indirectly employing 872,000, according to the National Mining Association. Miners at The Doe Run Company (Doe Run) operations near Viburnum extract lead, copper and zinc ore that serve as the raw materials for important products for daily life, including vehicle batteries, energy storage for solar and wind power, and protection from radiation in medical applications. More than 880 people work at Doe Run’s Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO), where they are responsible for exploring potential ore bodies, blasting and hauling ore to the surface, and milling the material to produce some of the purest lead concentrates in the world.

An accident occurred Friday at 2:35 in the afternoon in Crawford County in the eastbound lane of I-44 at the 214 mile marker. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by 20-year old Shantel N. Howard of St. James, was westbound in the eastbound lanes when the Ford struck a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado head on. The Chevrolet was driven by 35-year old Denise L. Weaks of Cuba.  Weaks sustained serous injuries and was transported by Air Evac to St. John’s Mercy in Creve Coeur. A passenger in the Chevrolet, 25- year old Tristen Weaks sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan by Crawford County Ambulance. A passenger in the Ford, 25-year old Lucas J. Gilbertson of St. James, also sustained serious injuries and was transported by Arch Helicopter to St. John’s Mercy in Creve Coeur. The report didn’t indicate any injuries for Howard.  According to the report, all persons involved except Gilbertson were wearing a safety restraint. Both vehicles were totaled and removed from the scene by Miles Towing

The Children’s Old-Fashioned Christmas will be held tonight from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at the Bonebrake Center of Nature and History at 601 North Hickory in Salem. Come out and help decorate the “Children’s Tree,” creating and decorating the old-fashion ways with popcorn, clothespin angels, paper chains, oranges and cookies. This program is appropriate for children through about 12 years old. The cost is $1 per child or $5 for the whole family. Adults are free. For more information call 729-3400.

The Salem Lady Basketball Tigers will face Mountain Grove in the first round of the Cabool Tournament today at 4:00. Salem is the first seed in the tournament with a 3-0 record.

Several Salem Football Tigers were spotlighted by the Missouri Football Coaches Association last week. Named to the Missouri Coaches Class 3 District 3 All District 1st Team were offensive lineman Austin Reed, defensive back Eli Floyd, wide receiver Antonio Quick and quarterback Dylan Wisdom. Named to the Class 3 District 3 All District 2nd Team were offensive linemen Max Knack and Jason Piatt, defensive lineman Kyle Hemken and wide receiver Cameron Howard. The Southwest Missouri Football Coaches Association also released their All-Area Football Team that had Austin Reed and Antonio Quick named to the 1st Team Offense, Derek McClain at running back named to the 2nd Team Offense and Dylan Wisdom made the Honorable Mention Offense Team. Eli Floyd was named to the 1ts Team Defense while Kyle Hemken was named to the 2nd Team and linebacker Taylor Shipp was named to the Honorable Mention Team. Finally, named to the MFCA All-State team were Austin Reed, Eli Floyd and Antonio Quick.

The Toronto Maple Leafs scored four unanswered goals and came back Saturday night to beat the St. Louis Blues, 4-1. The Blues will play Arizona tomorrow night.

Replacement running backs David Johnson and Kerwynn Williams scored a touchdown apiece and the Arizona Cardinals stuffed the punchless St. Louis Rams 27-3 on Sunday. The Rams (4-8) have lost five in a row and have been outscored 58-10 the last two.

Jeremy Maclin had two touchdowns catches after fourth-quarter interceptions and Tyvon Branch returned a third interception from Derek Carr for a game-clinching score against his former team and the Kansas City Chiefs rallied for their sixth straight win, 34-20 over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. The Chiefs improve to 7-5 are in the lead in the AFC Wild Card Race.

Kevin Puryear scored 17 points and Missouri beat Northern Illinois 78-71 Friday night, the Huskies' first loss of the season. Puryear led a balanced scoring effort. Terrence Phillips had 13 points to go with six assists, Jakeenan Gant had 11 points and six rebounds, and Namon Wright added 10 points and five rebounds.

Funeral services for Gabriele Gisela Carpenter of Dixon, age 64, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the ALS Association.

Funeral services for Lois Marie Bates of Salem, age 80, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Scenic Rivers Sheltered Workshop.

Private funeral services for James K. Powell of Rolla, age 96, will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Disabled Veterans Association. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.

Funeral services for James Edward Boley of Edgar Springs, age 42, are incomplete at this time and all arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem.
