The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5610, 5015, 6550, and 6500, while brush would be cut on county road 6505. Purcell added that two men would be hauling brown rock. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2590, 4040, 4055, and 2600, while materials would be added to and grading done on county road 4055. Larson went on to say that chip and seal patching would be done on county road 2300. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles had nothing to report. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that bills were being approved and her office was continuing to work on the budget for 2017. At last Thursday’s meeting of the Commissioners, fuel bids were taken by telephone. County Fuels submitted the low bid of $1.627 per gallon for diesel and $1.636 per gallon for gasoline and the bid was approved 3-0. Also at the last meeting the Commissioners agreed to seek bids on two graders. Bids are due on December 19th at 10:00 am and bid specs can be picked up in the County Clerk’s office. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning in the Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors will conduct their December meeting tonight at the fire station beginning at 6:00 PM. After approval of the agenda and minutes from the previous meeting, the Board will review financial reports, approve bills, address the 2017 budget and reimbursements. The Board will then look over their calendar of upcoming events including election filings dates. After the presentation of the monthly reimbursement report the Board will address and old and or new business followed by reports on various items. The Board will then set their next meeting for Tuesday, January 3rd at the fire station beginning at 6:00 PM.

The Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday evening in the city hall council chambers. In old business, there was a discussion on demolition dumpsters. City Attorney William Camm Seay presented to the board a bill that would proposed a $500 permit for dumpsters and $10 per truck permit to pickup the trash dumpster. The business would also have to be bonded and carry liability insurance. This is the same as for sanitation services that serve Salem excluding Waste Management who has a contract with the city. Alderman Chad Heithold felt that was too much for people to pay for a dumpster when they are cleaning up a property and said he did not mind the additional requirement of having insurance and being bonded as well as having a City of Salem Business License. After more discussion, it was determined the board would table this until the January 3rd meeting. In the City Administrator’s report, Chief Keith Steelman introduced the new full-time patrolmen Luke Burns. Ray Walden reported he has talked with the county and their architects about the new justice center and co-sharing the law enforcement space. He said he would bring back information from them once received. He said he was in Springfield last week with the GRO project and met with representatives from Marshfield and Sarcoxie to share information. He said Auditor Kristen DeLuca would present the city audit at the next meeting. Water and Sewer Superintendent Jack Emory told the board he discovered a hum at Well Pump #4 and a vibration in the floor. After being inspected, the motor on pump #4 is about to go out and they recommend replacing the pump at the same time to save money in the long run. Repair personnel will be in town today and tomorrow and the repairs could come to as much as $45,000. The pump will have one-year warranty and the motor a three-year warranty. Walden suggested the money be taken from the Capital Projects budget that was to paint the water tank in the industrial park and he will prepare that budget adjustment for the next meeting. He also said the city has about 85% of their storage capacity of salt in case of winter weather and he wanted to remind everyone the city has designated snow routes in case of inclement weather. Chief Steelman requested destroying old police records from 2010 as suggested in the Police Clerks Records retention Schedule manual and the board approved burning the records. The board then went into closed session.
