State Treasurer Clint Zweifel announced that he has returned nine Unclaimed Property accounts worth at least $100,000 to families and businesses operating in Missouri since June. The returns came from a variety of sources including securities, certificates of deposit, credit balances and insurance claim payouts. While these returns are among the largest for Treasurer Zweifel’s office this year, together they represent just over three percent of total Unclaimed Property returned so far in 2015. Some of the returns went to companies based in other states that have done business here in Missouri. Treasurer Zweifel has returned more than $242 million in Unclaimed Property—more than half of all returns in state history. Unclaimed Property can belong to individuals, businesses, nonprofits or any entity that conducts financial transactions. It can come from abandoned bank accounts, uncollected insurance policies, uncashed checks and more. State law requires entities holding unclaimed funds to turn them over to Treasurer Zweifel’s office after a statutorily defined period of time, generally five years. The assets are held by the office in perpetuity until the original owners or a proper heir is located. One in 10 Missourians has Unclaimed Property, and the average claim is $300. Anyone can search for their name, business or organization at ShowMeMoney.com. You may also sign up for email notifications and even donate your Unclaimed Property to any of 20 charitable organizations.

The Salem Police Department released reports involving a passed out male, a shoplifter and two small children walking down the street with no adult supervision. On Saturday, November 14th at 8:20 in the morning, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 1000 block of West Ellis in reference to a male with a needle in his arm not breathing. The investigation of the report revealed a 19-year old male of Salem was using heroin intravenously and had passed out. He was observed by medical personnel and released to a relative pending the application for a warrant. At 12:39 that afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Country Mart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation led to the arrest of a 35-year-old female of St. James for stealing merchandise valued at $7.84. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that evening at 6:30, an officer was detailed to the area of Franklin and Hickory in reference two small children walking down the street with no adult supervision. Officers of the Salem Police Department located the two children ages 1 and 3 and they were taken into protective custody. After further investigation, the children were placed in alternative care and the father, a 23-year old Salem male, was taken into custody for endangering the welfare of a child. He was later released pending a prosecutorial review and pending the issuance of a warrant. Anyone with any information regarding an incident is asked to call the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

The Salem Police Department has submitted reports. On Saturday, November 21st at 2:53 in the afternoon an accident occurred in the Wal-mart parking lot. According to the report a pedestrian was walking southwest into the pedestrian crosswalk, while a 2011 Toyota Tundra owned and operated by Sara Prugh of Salem was south bound. The report stated that the Toyota started to turn left in the crosswalk failing to yield to the pedestrian and made contact with said pedestrian. The pedestrian stated that her vision may have been obscured due to her hood up around her face and she did not see the Toyota. Prugh stated that she was looking to the west for vehicles before attempting to turn left and did not see the pedestrian. The pedestrian sustained minor injuries and was transported to Salem Memorial District Hospital by private vehicle.
