There will be no Your World Today Thanksgiving Day or Friday. Have a safe and happy holiday!

Colonel J. Bret Johnson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, encourages motorists to include safety in their plans for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The counting period for the 2015 Thanksgiving holiday weekend is from 6:00 tonight until 11:59 Sunday night, November 29, 2015. During the 2014 Thanksgiving holiday weekend, 18 people were killed and another 469 were injured in 1,151 traffic crashes. That means traffic crashes killed or injured one person every 12.6 minutes in Missouri over last year's Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The long Thanksgiving weekend allows Missourians to travel to see family, enjoy a mini vacation, or begin shopping for the upcoming holiday season. If you will be traveling this holiday, please make sure your car is in good condition before beginning your trip. It is also important that you are well rested before you start driving. Remember to buckle up -- seat belts save lives! Obey all of the traffic laws—all of the time. There is never a reason to speed, drive aggressively, or drive impaired. The Patrol will participate in Operation C.A.R.E (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) during this Thanksgiving holiday weekend. As part of this operation, all available troopers will be assigned to Missouri’s roadways to enforce traffic laws, especially those related to drunk driving, driving over the speed limit, and seat belt/child restraint use. Troopers will also be assisting motorists as needed. Over the past several years, the Patrol has used special traffic enforcement projects to further their efforts to decrease traffic crashes and fatalities. This Thanksgiving weekend will include such an enforcement project on November 25 and November 29, 2015. Troopers will be assigned at 20-mile intervals along Interstates 35, 44, 55, and 70, as well as U.S. Highways 60 and 63. The Highway Patrol’s Emergency Assistance number is 1-800-525-5555 (or *55 on a cellular phone). Motorists should use this emergency assistance number to report traffic crashes, crimes being committed, or other emergencies on Missouri’s highways. When you dial this number anywhere in the state, it rings directly into the closest Patrol headquarters. Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the traffic crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint.

On Wednesday, November 18th, Dent County Sheriff Department Deputies responded to the 7000 block of K Highway for a report of a burglary. As a result, Kyle Miller was arrested at the scene. The investigation revealed Miller had traveled to the residence and forced his way inside by breaking the glass on the front door and then reached inside and disengaged the doors deadbolt.  Miller intended to dissuade the victim from continuing with a report she had previously made for a theft. Miller was incarcerated in the Dent County jail and charged with one count of Burglary in the 2nd Degree and one count of Tampering with a Victim. Miller's bond has been set at $14,000 cash only. Then on Thursday, November 19th, Devon Leach and Kristin Statler were arrested for Peace Disturbance, in the 1st Degree. The arrest stemmed from an attempt to assault an ex-boyfriend in which Statler had arranged for the victim to be secluded and alone at the Shawnee Mac Conservation Area.

An accident occurred at 3:47 in the afternoon on Thursday, November 12th on Highway 19 at 5th Street in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Carmen Vaughan of Salem, a 2005 Ford Windstar driven by Amanda Bailey of Salem and a 2015 GMC C-1500 driven by Hunter Wingfield of Salem were all traveling northbound on Highway 19. The Chevrolet Equinox stopped waiting for traffic to make left turn onto 5th Street. The Ford Winstar stopped behind the Chevrolet. Salem Police Patrolman Matt Williams who witnessed the event, said the driver of the GMC was looking down and did not see the other vehicles. When Wingfield looked up and saw the vehicles stopped in front of him, he applied the brakes and attempted to avoid the Ford Windstar. The GMC collided with the Ford Windstar, causing the Ford to roll forward and then make slight contact with the Chevrolet. A passenger in the GMC sustained a possible injury and was complaining of abdomen pain. The driver of the Ford Windstar, Amanda Bailey sustained a possible injury and was complaining of head and neck pain. The Chevrolet Equinox sustained no apparent damage. The Ford Windstar sustained minor damage while the GMC sustained moderate damage.
