The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse for their regular meeting. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4080, 6220, 6230 and 6500 while materials would be added to county road 5600. Purcell reported workers would be cleaning away debris from a bridge on Dent County Road 6080 and also be cleaning out culverts on various routes from the rains from last week. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2260, 2270, 6120 and 6123 while brush would be cut on county road 3370. Larson went on to say materials would be added to county roads 2150 and 2380. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles indicated he contacted an electrician to check out the wiring in the building and the fixtures in the clerk’s office. The report he received back was the wiring is old and if the courthouse is going to go with LED lighting they may be better off getting new fixtures rather than trying to retrofit the old fluorescent tube fixtures to use LED lights. As far as the building is concerned, there really is no way to tell how the wiring is without getting inside the walls to find out. Skiles also said the courthouse would be closed this Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley was preparing the bills for approval, getting candidate packets put together and working on the county budget. At the last meeting, Dent County Assessor Tina Whitaker came in to update the commission on the DCAI lawsuit. Her attorney wanted to know if she wanted to start another appeal process, but the commissioners decided to put that on hold until the first appeal is settled. Also coming in at the last meeting was Judge Kelly Parker to discuss the Marvin Rice death penalty case. He said there will be three days of jury selection in Wayne County before the jurors are transported to Dent County. Wayne County will then be responsible for the jurors and will house the jurors in Dent County. He also discussed the tight security on the high profile case at the courthouse. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
