The Salem R-80 Board of Education met Thursday evening at the administration offices boardroom along with numerous parents and children. The children were there as part of an Upper Elementary Program where 5th graders wrote and illustrated their own stories before reading them to 2nd and 3rd graders. The board heard from five of the children who read and showed the board the illustrations in their books. These students all came from Mrs. Aubrey Letchworth’s class. The student liaison to the board Josh Sirois reported Natalie Leathers made the All-State Choir and Sydney Wood was an alternate. CPA Matt James from Willow Springs was in attendance to review the audit report for the Salem R-80 School District which showed the district is in good financial position. He showed where last year with the construction being done, expenses were almost 2.6 million dollars more than normal which was covered by the bond issue, but if you removed that number from the normal operating expenses and revenues, the school actually had a small gain of just over $9,000. As of July 1st, the school had $2.4 million in the General Fund, $277,000 in the Debt Service Fund and $674,600 in the Capital Improvements Fund. He also reported the schools pension plans are in good shape as the school has made the full employer contributions each year. Assistant Superintendent John Smith reported on the Annual Performance Report that showed Salem R-80 schools getting 90.4% of points in 2015. Smith reviewed each category in depth and told the board that Salem is already on track to have even a better score next year in a couple categories. In the Parent-Teachers Conference report, 91% of the students and parents at William Lynch participated while at the Upper Elementary, 98% participated. At the middle school, 87% of parents and students participated in Parent-Teacher Conferences. Superintendent John McColloch gave the budget update for the last month and told the board that some budget adjustments will need to be made as money previously used to pay the phone bill provided by the state can now only be used to buy new technology equipment; plus the equipment budget for the year is already overbudget due to a $60,000 payment for roof work that came out of the this year’s budget and not last year’s plus some other expenses like sealing parking lots and the changing of heating systems at William Lynch. Overall, the school is good financial shape. In the school reports, the William Lynch Elementary Christmas program will be held December 7th at 6:00 followed by the Upper Elementary 4th and 5th grade winter Program at 7:00 at the high school gym. The middle school band will have their Christmas concert on December 12th at the high school gym, while the middle school choir will perform on December 13th at 1:30 at the Grace Community Church. The Mr. SHS contest will be held at the high school gym on December 18th. The board approved the election sign up dates for two new board members from December 15th through January 19th. Bernie Sirois and Dustin Howard’s terms will be expiring. The board also approved holding graduation on May 20th at 7:00 at the Salem High School Football Field. The board then went into closed session.

An accident happened Thursday afternoon at 2:11 in Texas County on Route BB about 7½ miles south of Licking that took the life of a man from Licking. According to the highway patrol report, 61-year old Theodore Johnson of Licking was driving a 2000 Yamaha 4-Wheel ATV northbound when he tried to climb a right-of-way embankment. The ATV overturned backward on top of Johnson, trapping him under the ATV causing his fatal injuries. St. Louis lost four fumbles Sunday, the last leading to the game winning field goal for Baltimore as the Rams lost, 16-13. Justin Houston intercepted Philip Rivers and returned it 17 yards for a touchdown as the Kansas City Chiefs trounced the free-falling San Diego Chargers 33-3 Sunday. Alex Smith completed 20 of 25 passes for 253 yards. He also ran seven times for 33 yards. The Chiefs are now 5-5 on the year and they will play Buffalo on Sunday.

Jalen Hurd rushed for a career-best 151 yards on 34 carries and Joshua Dobbs had Tennessee's only touchdown on an 8-yard run with 17 seconds to go in the first half.
