An accident occurred at 8:05 Monday morning in Texas County on Highway 32 about two miles east of Success. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Mitsubishi Montero driven by 35-year old Nichole Bretz of Licking was traveling eastbound on highway 32 and ran off the roadway and overturned. Bretz suffered serious injuries and was transported by Air ambulance to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Mitsubishi Montero was totaled and removed from the scene by Jay’s Automotive.

The Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday night at the city hall council chambers. City Attorney William Camm Seay reported on the Public Hearing that was held prior to the Alderman meeting. The address for the property located at 401 E. Rubenstein was corrected to 303 E. Rubenstein, owned by Carlton Smith. Additional time for clean-up was requested. The property owned by Carol Boyd located at 604 E. Roosevelt also requested additional time and both requests will be reviewed by the building commissioner. If approved, the owners will have an additional 30 days and if clean-up is not done by that time, the City can request bids for demolition. City Administrator Ray Walden reported that the city offices will be closed Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday. Walden congratulated Southwest Baptist University for celebrating 30 years in Salem. He has been working with the Dent County Transportation Advisory Council, MRPC and MoDOT to create a local project priority list. Top priorities in the city limits include the intersections at Highway 19 and Franklin, and Highway 19 and Roosevelt. Additional projects are located in the county. The MRPC will compile other counties lists to submit a complete transportation prioritized list to MoDOT. The Economic Development position will be posted and filled soon. Mayor Brad Nash reported the Christmas Parade will be held Saturday, December 3rd at 5:30 pm. He thanked Marilyn Schweitzer for organizing the Veterans Hero Marathon that was held last Saturday with over 200 participants. The alderman approved Resolution No. 7-2016, a resolution providing for the Municipal Election for the City of Salem to be held on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 for one East Ward and one West Ward Alderman. The board approved Bill No. 3317, an ordinance adopting and enacting a new Chapter 210 (Offenses) of the code of ordinances of the City of Salem and providing for the repeal of existing code chapter 210. This ordinance is required to meet SB 491 and be in compliance with state law. The board approved setting the salaries of the newly elected officials to remain the same as the current rate, $400 per month. Park and Recreation Director Tye Lydon requested permission to go out for bid for the Universally Accessible Playground Project. This new equipment for the City Park is part of the LWCF grant that was recently approved through DNR. The aldermen approved this request. The board then went into closed session to discuss contracts.

The Trees and Trains Exhibit 2016 is now open from 9:00 to 5:00 Monday through Friday at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center. Over 300 people attended the Open House on Sunday and a total of $750 was raised through their raffle that will be presented to the Salvation Army. This year’s Trees and Trains Exhibit has 27 trees, four collections and 4 front windows. The hall is decorated to look somewhat like Union Station in St. Louis complete with ticket booth, domes on the wall and a clock to meet under. This event is absolutely free to everyone. The display will be closed Thanksgiving Day.

An accident occurred at 11:15 Monday morning in Dent County on private property off Dent County Road 5520 about 15 miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1994 Honda ATV driven by 71-year old Alfonso Perez of Salem was traveling eastbound when he made a sharp turn causing the ATV to eject him. Perez suffered minor injuries and was transported by Salem Ambulance to Salem Memorial District Hospital. The ATV suffered no damage and was driven from the scene.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Salem their Parade of Lights as this year’s theme is the “Color of Christmas.” It will be held on Saturday, December 3rd beginning at 5:30 PM. The parade route will run from the old Fairgrounds, located at the corner of South Grand & Franklin, north on McArthur to 4th Street and then east to the Dent County Courthouse. Those interested in participating in the parade need to fill out an entry form and those forms must be submitted by December 1st to 200 South Main. The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors will conduct a special meeting today at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm. The Board will review the minutes from the November Board meeting as well as review the budget for 2017. In new business the Board will conduct a discussion and formation of the DECRA (Dent County Emergency Responders Association). The special meeting of the Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors is open to the public.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will hold a special meeting today at 3:00 at the hospital library to discuss the employees’ health insurance wellness provision and also the SMDH Retirement employer and employee contributions. The meeting is open to the public.

Payton Curley scored 24 points and Kari Hatridge added 16 more as the Salem Lady Basketball Tigers beat the Plato Lady Eagles, 56-51 Monday night at the Salem High School Gym. Baylee Bilyou pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the Tigers who are now 2-0 on the year and they will be off until December 8th when they travel to West Plains.

Signups for all Salem Youth Basketball Leagues have been extended until Wednesday, November 30th for boys and girls in Kindergarten through 6th grade. Signups will be at the Salem Administrative Office located at 400 North Iron. Leagues will begin on December 17th and last through January 14th at the Salem High School Gym. The St. Louis Blues will be in Boston to face the Bruins tonight starting at 5:30. The Blues have struggled on the road this year with a 2-5-1 record while last year they were the best road team in the league. You can hear the game tonight on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Cardinals have announced they have signed free-agent left-handed reliever Brett Cecil to a four-year deal that extends through the 2020 season.  Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The 30-year old Cecil has been used exclusively as a reliever since 2013 after being drafted in the 1st round in 2007 by the Toronto Blue Jays. The Cardinals also announced they have designated catcher Brayan Pena for assignment to make room for Cecil on the team’s 40-man Major League roster.

Graveside Services for Alan David Grauf, age 83, of Salem will be held this afternoon at 1:30 at Jadwin Cemetery. Visitation will be held today at 11:00 to 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Internment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family for funeral expenses.

Funeral services for Virginia Byington of Salem, age 87, will be at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
