An accident occurred Saturday afternoon at 2:05 in Dent County on Highway 19 about two miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Ford Taurus driven northbound by Karen Ellis-Quick of Salem, traveled off the right side of the road, struck two signs and an embankment. Quick suffered serious injuries. She was transported by Air Evac to Cox Hospital in Springfield. She was not wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The Ford sustained moderate damage and was secured at the scene to be removed later by the owner.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their regular meeting Thursday evening at the district administrative boardroom. At the meeting, Phillip Giacomelli led some select William Lynch Students in their Veteran’s Day presentation for the board of education. CPA Matt James gave the audit report and said the district had a “clean” audit. He reported the school finances are solid as the district had an increase of over one million dollars in the general fund and the capital improvement fund balance is again close to a one million dollar balance. The board approved the auditor’s report. The building principals discussed the parent-teachers conferences before Assistant Superintendent John Smith gave a very positive Annual Performance Report. It showed Salem leading the SCA Conference with a 97.1% earned rating that featured a two point increase in math and a full ten score for attendance which is an area all Salem schools worked hard to achieve. Smith said it was 100% good news for the Salem schools. Lindsey Pike and a number of Salem Band Parents were in attendance to update the board on their new officers and give the board an idea of their duties with the band. She said there are 25-30 active band parents who support the Salem Marching Blue. After the principals gave the building reports, the board set the board filing dates from December 13th through January 17th during the regular office hours at the Salem R-80 District Administrative Offices. Three seats will be up for election and they will be Larry Maxwell, Holly Erway and Drew Whitaker. Superintendent John McColloch reported a mistake was made on the original lease for the Development Pre-School on the rent. The old lease called for a payment of $1,050 for the year and it was supposed to say $1,050 per month for the school year. The board agreed to revise the lease for the Developmental Pre-School. The board accepted the resignation of Phillip Karr as Assistant Football Coach and Alex Messina as a high school science instructor at the end of the school year. They also accepted the retirement letter from high school math teacher Karen Pace at the end of the school year. She has been teaching with the district for 37 years. The meeting was adjourned after closed session.
