The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors met for the regular meeting Tuesday evening at the hospital library. Hospital Attorney Mark Weaver swore in new board member Sue Terry from Hospital District 4 to replace the late Ken Sheriff. Chief Financial Officer Monica Gargus gave the summary of operations for October that showed inpatient admissions down along with outpatient registrations, but Emergency Room visits were above budget. The hospital had a gain from operations of $59,539 with an excess of revenues over expenses of $61,159. Cash increased during the month $151,256, while the days in accounts receivable stayed at 53. The Days cash-on-hand came in at 70 days for the first time in over two years. Chief Nursing Officer Debbie Hines reported during the month there were 48 acute care admissions plus 829 emergency room visits with an average turnaround time of 131 minutes. Also during the month, there were 199 ambulance runs with 144 patients transported to the hospital, 31 surgery cases, 1,586 outpatient registrations, 237 home health visits, 7,042 lab tests, 1,058 radiological procedures, 225 CT scans, 36 MRI scans, 7 nuclear med scans, 621 rehab treatments, 150 dialysis treatments and 323 clinical visits of which 50 were for cardiology. In Long-Term Care, Hines reported there is one bed available for a female patient. Hospital Administrator Kasey Lucas stated the Hospital Auxiliary had a successful Christmas wreath sales fundraiser, but the Scrubs and Beyond event scheduled for October 27th was not held due to a scheduling conflict. The auxiliary’s next meeting will be December 6th at noon at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. Lucas said the Hospital Foundation 5K run/walk was held November 5th at Montauk State Park with about 60 participants. He said the “Dancing with the Salem Stars” will be held Saturday, December 10th at 7:00 at the Salem City Hall Auditorium. Lucas said he received a letter of thanks from the Salem Parks and Recreation Department for the AED and wheelchair they donated for the Salem City Pool. He also said the billboard on Highway 32 West will have new displays. He reported that due to a scheduling conflict, People Centric did not make the November meeting, but sent a letter describing the updated dashboard activities. The board approved courtesy staff privileges for pulmonologist Shiraz Daud, M.D., and also approved the hospital by-laws as they are currently written. Lucas said since he does not have a consensus yet by the four county commissioners, the next election signups will still be by the current hospital voting districts. Signups for the election will begin December 13th and end on January 17th for a six-year term for District 4 currently held by Sue Terry, and a two-year term for District 6 currently being held by George Gruendel. The board approved the unbudgeted purchase of an interface conversion from the Lab Department to the Health Records Network from Evident, formerly known as CPSI, for $8,765. The next meeting was set for Tuesday, December 13th at noon at the hospital library. The board then went into closed session.

The Industrial Development Authority of the County of Dent will conduct a meeting tonight at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room on Fourth Street beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and minutes from the prior meeting and bills, they will review financial statements for the period ending November 15th. They will address any other business that comes before the Board and part of the meeting may include a vote to go into closed session. The meeting is open to the public.

“Honoring Our Heroes Marathon Day” will be held in Salem on Saturday, November 19th.  On that day, there will be a team of enrollment specialists at the American Legion Port #99/VFW Post #6280 located on Highway 32 West from noon until 3:30 in the afternoon. This is being held to assist Veterans with signing up for VA health care services that are available to them.

There will be a raffle with David Massengale acting as the emcee, plus over $1,300 in prizes has been donated so far with the proceeds benefiting the Salvation Army. There will also be door prizes for kids, music, Christmas Cookies and punch. And of course, you will be the first to see this year’s Trees and Trains Exhibit with their 27 trees, four collections and 4 front windows. The hall is being decorated to look like Union Station in St. Louis complete with ticket booth, domes on the wall and a clock to meet under. This event is absolutely free to everyone.
