The Dent County Commission met Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. At the meeting, Dent County Clerk Angie Curley gave out a sales tax report for the General Revenue fund and the Road and Bridge Fund. The money to the R&B Fund was the first received from the new sales tax for the Road and Bridge Fund that started being collected in October. That amount came to $2,761.84. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said workers were removing trees from Dent County Roads 6180, 6470 and 6510. Workers would also be checking other roads for downed trees or debris on the road. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said workers in District 2 would also be out checking roads for any downed trees or debris. He said two men would be cutting brush on Dent County Roads 4050 and 4060 while materials would be added to county roads 2150 and 2210. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported on the SACBA Board meeting held Monday. He said the Trees and Trains exhibit would hold their open house on November 22nd from 1:00-4:00 and the exhibit would be open Monday through Saturday starting November 23rd. He also stated the awards banquet had a tentative date of February 18th, 2016 and the Trivia Night had a tentative date of April 2nd, 2016. Energy Director Todd Richardson and the new Executive Director Ann Smith from the South Central Missouri Community Action Agency were in attendance. Smith, who was just made the new executive director, talked of her history with the SCMCAA. She started in 1988 in education and worked with Head Start, became the Head Start Director in 2004 and was named to take over for Judy Young as Executive Director as she is retiring this year. She talked about the Head Start program as they serve 449 children with a budget of $3,340,446 and the Early Head Start program that serves 96 children with a budget of $1,437,129. They have a staff of over 165 people who consist of teachers, teacher aides and drivers, cooks, family advocates, supervisors, home visitors and component managers. Head Start has a limit of 17 children per classroom with three staff and the Early Head Start has a limit of eight children per class with three staff members. Todd Richardson told the commission about the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act Youth Program to help in or out of school youth complete their secondary education, enter post secondary education or training, or to enter into employment; plus the TANF summer jobs program for economically disadvantaged youth to obtain skills to succeed in the workplace; as well as the State Youth Park Corps which is for Missouri youth to work at Missouri State Parks and historic sites. Richardson also discussed the SCMCAA Weatherization and Home Repair programs they offer. The Weatherization program can offer assistance to those who or at above 200% of the federal poverty level while the Home Repair assistance is based on a persons income at or below 50% of the area median income. The South Central Community Action Agency also offers community services through the CSBG family development projects like the Back to School fair before school starts, the LIFT program, the VITA program, CARF program and more. They also run the LIHEAP program that can help provide funds for those who need help in meeting their home heating needs during the winter. That application process is underway now and will be open until March 31st. Eligible clients must meet income criteria.
