The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley Appointed District Two Commissioner Gary Larson as acting Presiding Commissioner in the absence of Commissioner Skiles. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done and materials added to Dent County Road 5380, while materials would be added to and ditch work done on county road 5050. He went on to say that he had a crew member adjusting rock screens at the Road and Bridge Department for the screening of rock. Purcell said that today a member of his crew would be going to Springfield to get a load of oil to be used primarily on patching chip and seal on county road 4210. Commissioner Larson reported  grading would be done on Dent County Road 2330 and materials would be added to county roads 2370 and 2200. He reported he had a man that was either going to screen brown rock or, if the tractor got repaired, he would be cutting brush on county road 6150. Larson also stated he would be following up on a citizen’s complaint about brush covering the stop sign at the intersection of Dent County Road 6150 and Highway 32 to see if the brush was on county or state property. Larson and Purcell both commented that they had different crew members out on varying days using comp time or vacation time during the hunting season. Curley reported that the Commission was doing payroll and that election results were certified just after noon yesterday. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

Preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) shows that deer hunters in Missouri harvested 96,131 deer during the opening weekend of the November portion of the fall firearms deer season November 12th and 13th. Of the 96,131 deer harvested, 55,753 were antlered bucks, 8,873 were button bucks, and 31,505 were does. Top harvest counties for opening weekend were Franklin with 2,041 deer checked, Howell with 1,950 and Texas with 1,939. Last year hunters checked 93,896 deer during the opening weekend of the 2015 November portion of firearms deer season. Dent County recorded 914 antlered bucks, 205 button bucks, and 718 does for a total of 1,837. The November portion of fall firearms deer seasons continues through November 22nd. Archery deer season opens again November 23rd through January 15, 2017. The late youth portion of firearms deer season runs November 25th thru 27th. The antlerless portion of firearms deer season runs December 2nd thru 4th. Lastly the alternative methods portion will run December 24th through January 3, 2017. Deer hunting is an important economic driver in Missouri and gives a $1 billion annual boost to the state and local economies.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will conduct their November meeting tonight in the hospital library beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the minutes from the October 18th meeting, Chief Financial Officer Monica Gargus will update the Board with the summary of operations and statistics reports for October followed by Chief Nursing Officer Debbie Hines report. Hospital Administrator Kasey Lucas will then update the Board on the Hospital Foundation, auxiliary events and legislative issues. In old business, the Board will conduct an annual bylaw review and address hospital districts. During new business the Board will move their December meeting to Tuesday, December 13th, address election filings that begin December 13th and end January 17th for one six-year term in District #4 and a remaining two-year term for District #6. The Board will also address purchases made for the hospital and may vote to go into closed session. The November meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Foundation will be hosting their first annual “Dancing with the Salem Stars” fundraiser on Saturday, December 10th. Twelve couples will be dancing to help raise funds for updates to patient rooms. The “Dancing with the Salem Stars” will be held at the Old City Hall Auditorium. Participating in this year’s contest will be Dennis Pryor paired up with Rosalie Wright, Scott Roberts dancing with Barb Medlock, Nathan Miracle will dance with Lorna Mundwiller, Perry Novak is going to dance with partner Jan Gott, Teel Wisdom will trip the light fantastic with Emma Heithold, Don Sneed will partner up with Dottie May, Brett Capps will dance with Linda Maledy, Zach Moser will strut his stuff with Jackie Sisco, Shannon Wright will partner up with Karla Tiefenthaler, Patrick McCoy will share the floor with Lena Sherrill, Tye Lydon will partner up with Elizabeth Halbrook and Mike Wofford will dance with Glenda Wofford. Again the fundraiser will be held Saturday, December 10th at the Old City Hall Auditorium starting at 7:00 with the doors opening at 6:30. Advance tickets are available by calling 247-8600 or 247-3292. Table seating on the floor will cost $20 in advance and $25 at the door, while balcony seats are available for $10 in advance or $15 at the door while they last.

An accident happened in Crawford County Sunday night at 10:45 on Highway 49 just north of Route V. According to the highway patrol, 21-year old Samantha Callahan of Viburnum fell asleep and the 2013 Ford Focus she was driving went off the left side of the road and struck a tree. Callahan suffered moderate injuries and was flown by Air Evac to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. The Ford Focus was totaled and removed from the scene by Abney’s Towing of Viburnum.

Seniors Camryn Pryor and Shelby Carr were both named to the 2016 All-Ozone Softball Team for their efforts this year. Congratulations to both girls on their accomplishment.

The Salem Lady Tiger Basketball Tigers and the Salem Boys Tiger teams will be hosting a jamboree at the SHS High School and Upper Elementary School gyms starting at 4:30.

The Blues begin a three-game home stand starting tonight against the Buffalo Sabres at 6:30 on KSMO Radio. The Blues have lost two straight games.

Signups for all Salem Youth Basketball Leagues are open for boys and girls in Kindergarten through 6th grade now through this Friday at the Salem Administrative Office located at 400 North Iron. Leagues will begin on December 17th and last through January 14th at the Salem High School Gym. The cost is $25 per player. Funeral services for Charles Conrad Jensen of Salem, age 96, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 10:00 until service time. Funeral services for Frederick Levi “Fred” Capps of Salem, age 78, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held Friday morning from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery on Sunday at 2:00 in Oak Grove, Missouri. Funeral services for William A. “Bill” Brewer of Salem, age 95, will be held Saturday, November 19th at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00. Funeral services for JoAnn Crabtree of Bourbon, age 80, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Turnbough Cemetery in Davisville.
