An accident occurred at 7:50 Wednesday morning in Dent County on Highway 19 about three miles north of Salem took the life of a Salem man. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup driven by 51-year old Shane Canaday of Salem was traveling southbound on Highway 19. Canaday ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. Canaday was pronounced dead at the scene by Dent County Coroner Gina White. Canaday was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet S-10 was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. His body was taken from the scene by Coroner Gina White to the Dent County Coroner’s office.

According to a news release from the Associated Press, the University of Missouri Police Department arrested a Missouri University of Science and Technology student in Rolla early Wednesday morning for making a terrorist threat on a social media application. According to the release, 19-year old Hunter M. Park allegedly made the threat to kill black students at the University of Missouri Columbia campus on the Yik Yak social media app. The threat was reported Tuesday to the University of Missouri Police Department by numerous people. Park was contacted around 1:50 a.m. in Rolla by the UM police. He was transported to the University of Missouri Police Department in Columbia where he was arrested and processed. Park was transported to the Boone County Jail where he was placed in lieu of a $4,500 bond. The media release states that Park is not a University of Missouri-Columbia student and that the police department would not be releasing additional information at this time due to the investigative nature of the report. The police department indicated they would not release a mug shot of Park for his safety.

Residents of Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties who have household hazardous waste materials, like car batteries, CFL light bulbs, used oil or antifreeze or other toxic, poisonous or flammable products, can dispose of them free of charge, year round, at satellite Household Hazardous Waste facilities in Rolla. The Rolla facility is located at the Rolla Recycling Center at 2141 Old St. James Road. While the service is free, an appointment is necessary to drop-off materials at either location. Ozark Rivers Solid Rolla to establish and operate the facility. Solid waste department employees in Rolla have been trained Waste Management District (ORSWMD), in partnership with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), provided funding to in accepting waste and proper storage. Persons interested in using the facility can make an appointment by calling the Rolla Recycling Center during normal business hours. The Rolla number is (573) 364-6693. When you call, please be prepared to describe the types of materials and quantity of each that you wish to drop off so that staff can make arrangements to receive and properly store the materials at the facility. A substance is considered hazardous when it contains ingredients or a combination of ingredients that can be harmful to the environment and/or human health. HHW products may ignite easily, react or explode when mixed with other substances, or may be corrosive, toxic or poisonous. Each facility has established limits on the number of gallons of liquids that a household can drop off in a visit.

Percolation Test Certification Training will be Friday and Saturday, December 11th and 12th, 2015, at Johnson County Extension Center, in Warrensburg. This course is for individuals who want to obtain certification to conduct soil percolation tests for determining soil absorption qualities of sites being considered for installation of an on-site sewage system. Instructors for the 2-day event will be David Lindell, retired University Extension Agronomy Specialist and John Tharp, retired University Extension Water Quality/Community Development Specialist. The cost of the 2-day course is $160 per person. Each participant who completes the course will also need to provide a payment of $90 to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. This is in addition to the $160 course fee to Johnson County Extension. Registration will be a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 25 participants per class and will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration is due by Tuesday, December 1st, 2015. We must receive the $160 payment by registration deadline. At the end of the training course, an exam will be given by the instructors and mailed for grading by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. DHSS certification cards will be mailed to those successfully completing the exam. The training site is upstairs at the Johnson County Extension Office, 135 W. Market Street, Warrensburg, MO 64093. The Salem Fall Sports Banquet will be held at the Salem High School Cafeteria tonight at 6:00 to recognize students in softball, cross country, football, volleyball and cheerleading.

The Blues will be in New York to face the Rangers Thursday night starting at 5:30 to wrap up their four game road trip. The Blues have won the first four games on the trip and are still one point behind Dallas for 1st place in the Central Division and Western Conference. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced Tuesday afternoon that right-handed pitcher Lance Lynn underwent “Tommy John” surgery in St. Louis to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow while also having the ulnar nerve transposed and bone chips removed. The 28-year old Lynn will miss the entire 2016 season. An All-Star in 2012, Lynn recorded his third-straight season of 30 or more starts in 2015 and is one of just 16 Major League pitchers with 175.0 or more innings pitched in each of the past four seasons.

Funeral services for Cecil Hockett of Salem, age 88, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Salem Chapel. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery will full military honors.

Funeral services for Rosemary Parker of Arnold, age 88, will be held today at 12:30 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 12:00 until service time today. Interment will be in the Greeley Cemetery.

Funeral services for Charles Harvey Hughes of Rolla, age 85, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time.

Funeral services for Jimmy Allen Conway of Salem, age 61, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
