The Dent County Commission met Thursday morning for their regular meeting in the Dent County Courthouse. Sheriff Elect Bob Wells was in to observe and absorb what occurs in the Commissioners meeting before he takes office in January. Deputy Wayne Becker was in to request that bids be taken on a used police interceptor to replace the one that was wrecked. The Commissioners agreed to accept bids and they are to be opened at 10:00 in the morning on November 17th. Becker will send out the bids and notify local auto dealers about the bids. Bids are to be submitted to Dent County Clerk Angie Curley’s office. Becker also updated the Commissioners on the Sheriff’s Department budget status, which he said looks good at this point. He also noted that the Sheriff’s Department had received a $7,000.00 Federal Grant to be used for travel and training and is to be expended by June. Richard LaBrash, the American Legion Chaplain, was in to present information about the 2016 Adopt-A-Vet Program for vets in the St. James Veterans Home. He also shared information about the Honoring Our Heroes Marathon. He discussed the enrollment and eligibility specialists’ team that will be in Salem to assist Veterans with signing up for VA health care. The team will be at the American Legion Post 99/VFW Post 6280 from noon until 3:00 pm on Saturday, November 19th. LaBrash expressed thanks to the community for signing the petitions, and the behind the scenes work to the effort to get the Salem Veterans Clinic expanded. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams was in to share sales tax receipts. She said that general revenue for November was $53,545.27, which makes the year-to-date a positive $22,329.64 when compared to 2015 and the total year-to-date totals $754,990.96. Williams went on to say that the Road & Bridge sales tax was $24,314.50 so the year-to-date for that fund is $347,801.27. When asked if they had any statement about their re-election, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell thanked the voters for returning him to office and he’s committed to provide timely service and support for the county residents. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson echoed Purcell’s comments. Both indicated they are committed to improving the infrastructure of Dent County. In the road report, Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5380, 5390, 2400, 2430 and 2410, while brush would be cut on county roads 6350 and 6480. He added that materials would be added to Dent County Roads 5410, 5420 and 6370. Larson’s report indicated that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2303 and 2270, while materials would be added to and grading done on county roads 2200 and 2360. He went on to say that patch grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4290 and 4280, while brush would be cut on county roads 3330, 4030 and 4040. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said he would be attending the MRPC External Relations and Board meetings where MRPC’s Missouri legislative priorities for the Meramec Region would be reviewed and prioritized. The legislative priorities will be presented to the Missouri Legislators that attend the December meeting of MRPC. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that she and Treasurer Denita Williams balanced on all accounts for October and bills were being paid. Curley said she was pleased with the 71.4% turnout for Tuesday’s general election. She added that there were lots and lots of address changes. Curley also noted that the Courthouse would be closed today in observance of Veteran’s Day. Bonnie Prigge and Anne Freand of MRPC, along with MoDOT Central District Engineer Preston Kramer were in to discuss transportation needs and set priorities for Salem and Dent County. Kramer pointed out that the Central District has adequate funding to maintain current road conditions and replace bridges nearing closure status. He noted that the Dry Valley Bridge on Highway 32 and 72 would be replaced in 2017 and that a temporary bridge would be in place during the replacement. Kramer added that the bridges over Dry Creek and Holt Creek on Highway F would be replaced in 2018. Ray Walden and Gary Brown, who serve on MRPC’s Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) along with Darrell Skiles and Bob Parsons, were also in attendance. After extensive discussion, it was agreed that Dent County’s highest three priorities were 1) Highway 19 intersections at Franklin and Roosevelt 2) Highway 68 roadway aprons to Highway 19 and 3) the installation of a bridge over Crooked Creek on Highway TT. These priorities, along with those from throughout the Meramec Region, will be presented to the TAC Committee in December for regional prioritization. Their next meeting will be Monday morning at the Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers had six girls named the All SCA 1st Team and three more were named to the 2nd team. Awarded 1st team honors were pitcher Kari Hatridge, infielders Camryn Pryor and Payton Curley, outfielders Shelby Carr and Kirsten Strebe and utility player Bekah Kirker. Making the All SCA 2nd team were catcher Shaylee Harrison, outfielder Lexi Woolman and utility player Trista Heavin. The 2016 SCA Player of the Year went to Kari Hatridge and Don Smith was named the SCA Coach of the Year.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers had Faith Roberts named to the All-SCA Honorable Mention Team. She was the only Tiger representative this year.

The Salem Tiger Basketball Blue/White Night will be held tonight at the Salem R-80 Upper Elementary gym from 5:00 to 7:00. Admission to the Blue/White Night will be $1.00 and all admissions will be donated directly to the Strebe family. The Benchwarmers Booster Club is also sponsoring a Chili Supper from 5:00 to 7:00.

Calle Jarnkrok scored twice to lead the Nashville Predators over the St. Louis Blues 3-1 on Thursday night. James Neal also scored and Pekka Rinne made 23 saves for Nashville, which has won two straight.  Jaden Schwartz had the lone goal and Carter Hutton made 25 saves for the Blues. The Blues will be at Columbus Saturday afternoon at 5:30 on KSMO Radio.

The Missouri Tigers will host Vanderbilt this Saturday starting at 12:30 on KSMO Radio with the pre-game show. Missouri is 2-7 this year.

The Kansas City Chiefs will be at Carolina Sunday to face the Panthers at 12:00 noon. The Chiefs are 6-2 on the year.

Funeral services for James Lester Schafer of Salem, age 74, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Green Forest Cemetery.

Funeral services for William W. Aaron Sr. of Rolla, age 94, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla with Full Military Honors. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 today. Interment will be in the Roach Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.

Funeral services for Eldon Abraham Barton of Cherryville, age 85, will be held Monday, at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Smith Cemetery in Oates.

Funeral services for William A. “Bill” Brewer of Salem, age 95, will be held Saturday, November 19th at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post #99.
