The launch meeting of the Salem Initiative was held Saturday morning at SBU in front of a packed house. Jennifer Tune Fenwick gave the history and the details of how the initiative came about growing from two groups after the same goal: the Salem Economic Task Force and Better Salem Initiative. She said the initiative would have to be a unified effort, would need to use all available resources and tools to the city, be organized and provide for a long-term strategic plan. This will take the development of “a community of leaders to work together” to make this happen. She indicated this was just the first of many meetings that would need to occur. Also addressing the crowd was Alex Sellers who brought statistics of how technology is changing the American workforce with now 7% of people working from home doing “telecommuting” which is what he does himself. But these changes comes with the need of greater Internet capabilities and speaker Bryon Craig discussed the need for better Internet access in our areas as many people still have dial-up or satellite Internet access which is too slow. He described options some other towns have taken and said a fiber optic network would be the best resource for Salem, but it is not available at this time. Finally, A.J. Schafer brought in his perspective on small business and their need to be a part of the technology advancement before they are left behind. The overall message in this meeting was to look at the assets the Salem community has, then enhance and develop those assets using positive, inclusive forward thinking leaders to create a plan that will empower residents to become part of the initiative; look at how combining efforts toward reaching the goals will take resources such as money, volunteers, equipment and more; then move forward to achieve the goals at hand. After a group breakout session following lunch, the meeting was adjourned. For more information about The Salem Initiative, check out the website at www.thesaleminitiative.com. They are also holding a photography contest looking for good, quality pictures of our area that will showcase the talents of our local photographers. These photos will then be used to further develop their website, as well as being used as marketing materials for the area. If you would like to participate in the photo contest, check out the website for all the details.

An accident happened Sunday morning at 2:40 on Interstate 44 at the 192.6 mile marker that left a St. James man with serious injuries. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Chevy Tahoe driven eastbound by 22-year old Kayne Faletogo went off the right side of the roadway where the Tahoe overturned several times, completely ejecting Faletogo from the Tahoe. Faletogo was airlifted by the Arch Helicopter to the University Hospital in Columbia. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

In light of recent incidents and inquires, the Salem Police Department would like to address the use of vehicles described as mopeds (motorized bicycles), scooters, pocket bikes, electric bikes, mini bikes and/or mini scooters. These vehicles are defined as “any two or three-wheeled device having an automatic transmission with an electric equivalency to 50cc’s which produces less than three gross brake horsepower and are capable of propelling the device at a maximum speed of not more than 30 miles per hour on level ground.”  So If you have a motorized bicycle or scooter, whether it is gas or electric that does not meet these specifications, it is classified as a motorcycle and the rider and cycle must be licensed as such. If your device does meet these requirements, a motorcycle endorsement is NOT required and the motorized bike does NOT have to be registered with the Missouri Department of Revenue. Remember, to operate any motorized bicycle, moped, scooter, pocket bike, mini bike or electric bike on the public streets in the City of Salem, Missouri law requires you to have a valid driver’s license. Missouri law does not require a helmet to be worn when operating a motorized bicycle, although it is strongly recommended as a certified helmet can prevent serious head injuries or death. Keep in mind that no motorized bicycle may be operated on any Interstate Highway. Brakes, a white light, a rear red reflector and reflective material or lights on various parts of the motorized bicycle are just a few equipment requirements that can ensure that your vehicle is safe to operate and visible to those around you. If you have questions, please contact the Salem Police Department before taking your motorized bike it on the streets. Violators of the law may be given a citation.
