In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2470, 5420 and 5440 while brush will be cut on county road 6210. Purcell stated a man would be going to Springfield to get oil for chip and seal repair on primarily Dent County Road 4120 but some other roads as well. He also said a crew would be servicing grader #33. Purcell did report that on Friday, November 4th, the Title 2 funds for the road improvements on Dent County Roads 5600 and 5610 had been released. He said work would start on those roads very soon. The Title 2 funds in Dent County can only be used for repairs on roads through the Mark Twain National Forest. The amount of the reimbursement will be $16,248. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2340, 6130, 6140 and 6160.  He said materials would be added and grading done on county road 4040 plus brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 4330, 4370 and 4400. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reminds everyone to vote and make your voice heard. The polls will be open from 6:00 AM until 7:00 today and make sure you bring your voter ID card or some other form of governmental ID with you. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley is asking all voters to please be patient as there could be long lines. At the last meeting, Commissioner Larson wanted to seek bids on a used 2006-2010 used truck for the Road and Bridge Department with bids due in by November 17th at 10:00 in the morning. Bid spec will be in the county clerk’s office. The next meeting of the commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department has released some reports. On Wednesday, November 2nd, a report of stolen license plates was taken by a deputy in the 1900 block of Highway 119, but no suspect information was given or available. On Friday, November 4th, Dent County Deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 100 block of West 4th Street. As a result of the stop, Antonio L. Quick of Salem was arrested for operating a motor vehicle without a valid license. Quick was later released with a summons to appear in court. That same day, deputies took a report of a theft in the 600 block of Dent County Road 3030. It was discovered that the victim had $75.00 worth of plumbing supplies taken from his residence. No suspect information was given or was available. On Sunday, November 6th, deputies responded to the 100 block of Dent County Road 3255 for a report of theft. It was discovered that the victim had a flatbed utility trailer that had been taken from his property. The trailer has been valued at $800.00. The investigation continues on all the open cases.

The Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday evening at the City Hall Council Chambers. The board approved the purchase of 54 30-foot poles from Bridgewell for $168.55 each for a total of $9,101.70 and the city will have to unload these poles. Even though they approved the bid, the aldermen were concerned that the city is only receiving one bid for items now and they would like to have at least two if not three. City Administrator Ray Walden said the city may have to expand their public notices to reach other companies and it would be an additional expense, but he will look into it. City Clerk Mary Happel did some investigation on construction dumpster rentals from other towns and really did not find a direct correlation. When looking at waste disposal dumpsters in five different towns, they each do things differently with some requiring permits, some allowing them on streets with conditions, etc. Alderman Haydn Powell suggested the discussion be postponed until another meeting until the City Attorney William Camm Seay can formulate a policy that would determine whether a permit would be needed or if it falls with the city’s ordinances. The issue was postponed byu the board. Parks and Recreation Director Tye Lydon reported on the flag football held this fall and it was a success. He said signups for the Youth Boys and Girls Basketball League is now underway for children in kindergarten through the 6th grade. The cost per child is $25.  He also said that in 2017, he would start another Adult Basketball League and the cost would be $300 for a team of no more than 12 players. Parks and Recreation Board President Stan Podorski reported the Park Board approved the Park Board by-laws with a few updates. He also said they are considering their options on the pool house roof at this time. He did report the TAP grant for sidewalk improvement at the Salem City Park as well as up Route J and out to Vandevort Avenue was submitted on October 31st. The city should know by January 2nd if they received that grant. He said the Park Board wants to develop a field protocol for games, and also reported the Park Board would like to inspect the land on Highway 19 South for the possibility of putting a Soccer Field there in the near future provided the ground is in good shape. City Administrator Ray Walden reported the city offices would be closed on Friday for Veteran’s Day, and the Cops Hiring Grant that pays 75% of the police officer’s salary has not yet been funded. They hope to apply again for that grant if funds become available. He also said if anyone is interested in the GRO initiative to let him know. Walden said a request came in to be able to serve alcohol at the Salem City Hall Auditorium and Attorney Seay said the wording in the city’s insurance would allow that to be done, but it would take a policy change that would need to be approved by the aldermen. He said he would prepare that policy for the next meeting. He also said that Walden will be involved in two demolition hearings for properties in the city limits. Attorney Seay reported the Master’s Industrial Park property boundaries were off and they are being re-recorded, plus the covenants for the Master’s Industrial Park were never recorded back in the 80’s when the park was established. Seay was instructed by the board to review the covenants and update them to make sure the city is protected by any business going in at the park. The board then went into closed session.
