The Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday evening at the City Hall Council Chambers. At the meeting, the board approved a ten foot long dump body for a Ford F-750 regular cab truck from Knapheide in Jefferson City with an optional Western un-mount plow mount for a total cost of $20,232. They also approved the updated city map that was approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission at their October 19th meeting. Chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission Jerry Craig said they would still like the city to annex in the Al Brown Fields and the Sewer Treatment Facility into the city limits. He said the updated map should be displayed in the Council Chambers and at the Administrative Offices. There will be a Planning and Zoning Workshop on November 9th at 6:00 in the Council Chambers. City Administrator Ray Walden said the new playground equipment at the city park is being installed this week, and bids for organizations interested in running the city’s sports programs is due Friday, November 6th at 3:00. There were 3,675 people who participated in activities at the Salem Community Center @ The Armory in October. Walden reported the LAGERS retirement program the city is involved with was named on of the top public retirement programs. He said the Salem Economic Initiative would be held Saturday at the Salem SBU campus from 9:30 until 3:00. He went on to report the Salem Chamber of Commerce Banquet will be held November 10th at His Place. Call the chamber5 for ticket prices and more information. The city offices will be closed November 11th for Veteran’s Day. Mayor J.J. Tune gave details about the average salary and benefits of city employees. He stated their base average salary is $17.86 per hour and their benefits per hour are $11.06, and if you add the federal benefit guideline recommendation of adding 20% to the $11.06 figure, it becomes $13.21 per hour. Tune said the average per capita income in Salem is $17,004. He said the total benefits a city employee gets in one year comes to be almost $5,000 more than the average per capita income of many residents, and with the federal guideline recommendation that number is almost $9,000 more. He said there certainly needs to be a cap on the health insurance the city pays for each employee, possible $400, but he wants the finance committee to review this for the upcoming budget. The board approved Bill #3307 that replaces Bill #3306 as it needed to include specific wording from DNR for the professional services agreement between the City of Salem and CM Archer Group, PC for wastewater system improvements. Mayor Tune appointed Jim Heavin to the Planning and Zoning Board of Adjustment to replace Tod Kinerk who resigned. The board approved the purchase of 376.50 tons of one inch white rock in the amount of $3,106.15 from Capital Quarries. Water and Sewer Superintendent Jack Emory told the board that Clarifier #1 needed extensive work with the parts and labor coming to $6,124 for it to be operational. The board approved paying for the repair work. The board then adjourned.

The 2015 Trees & Trains 10th Anniversary Exhibit is gearing up in Salem.  You may participate by signing up to display a decorated tree or a Christmas collection or donate a wreath or decoration for the silent auction. Displays will be set up November 13th through the 20th. The event kicks off with an open house on Sunday, November 22nd from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. The exhibit runs November 23rd through December 24th. Admission is free. Come see the model trains whiz through village and country scenes surrounded by dozens of beautifully decorated Christmas trees, one could even be yours. Santa will be in his workshop Dec 12 and 19 from noon until 5 p.m. both days. 

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) announced that young hunters from age 6 through 15 checked a total of 14,095 deer during Missouri's early youth portion of the 2015 deer hunting season, which ran October 31st and November 1st. Top counties for the early youth portion were Franklin with 338, Osage with 337, and Howell with 288 deer checked. Last year's harvest total for the early youth portion was 18,091. Archery deer hunting continues through November 13th and again from November 25th though January 15th, 2016. Up next for deer hunting in Missouri is the November portion of firearms deer season, which runs from the 14th through 24th. That will be followed by the firearms deer antlerless portion running November 25th through December 6th. The firearms deer alternative methods portion will run December 19th-29th followed by firearms deer late youth portion on January 2nd and 3rd, 2016.

On Tuesday, November 10th, the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will hold their Annual Banquet & Silent Auction at His Place at the corner of Pershing and Center Streets beginning at 6:30 PM. The doors will open at 6:00 PM. Tickets are now available at the Chamber office and the cost is $15 for adults and $5 for children. The Kansas City Royals had over 500,000 fans show up for their parade and party in downtown Kansas City. The World Series party is expected to cost about $350,000 with city officials saying most of that will be covered by sponsors.

Jhonas Enroth posted his sixth career shutout as the Los Angeles Kings defeated the St. Louis Blues 3-0 on Tuesday night. Jake Allen made 31 saves for the Blues, who lost for the first time in four games and were handed their first regulation loss in six home games. The Blues will play Chicago tonight at 7:00, on KSMO Radio.

Salem will travel to Mountain Grove for the District Championship game Friday night at 7:00. Admission to the game will be $6.00 for anyone six years of age and older. Salem enters the game with a 6-5 record while Mountain Grove is 9-2.

Funeral services for Bruna “Marie” Cuccarollo of St. James, age 98, will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 at the Immaculate Catholic Church in St. James. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 tonight at the St. James Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Rosati. Funeral services for Delphia Mae Bacon of Salem age 83, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the First Baptist Church in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Alzheimer Association.

Memorial services for Joe Boze of Rolla, age 59,will be at 2:00 Friday at Fox Funeral Home Chapel in Licking. Visitation will be Friday at 1:00 P.M. at Fox Funeral Home.  

Funeral services for Trish Redding Huff of Boss, age 44, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Boss Assembly of God Church. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Austin and Blake’s College Fund.

Funeral services for Joseph Birton Frits of Salem, age 66, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be at a later date. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post #99.
