The Salem Police Department would like to warn the public to be alert for telephone scams and offers from callers claiming to be from the IRS. These con artists can sound very convincing when they call and may even know a lot about you. They even have the ability to alter the caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling and can use fake names and bogus badge numbers. The most common theme with these tricks seems to be fear and make people think they have to do anything. They will call demanding payment, and will ask for or demand credit and/or debit card numbers. They also make threats of calling the police and tell you that you have to do something NOW…do not fall these types scams. They will even go so far as to leave a call back number and when you call that number back, you are put on hold for a long long time, and at your expense. If you get a phone call from anyone claiming to be from the IRS and asking for money…call the IRS yourself…if you owe taxes or think you might owe taxes…call the IRS yourself at 800-829-1040 to talk about payment options. If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to believe that you do…report the incident to TIGTA at 1-800-366-4484 or at www.tigta.gov. The IRS currently DOES NOT use unsolicited email, text messages or any social media to discuss your personal tax issues. For more information on reporting tax scams, go to 222.irs.gov and type “scam” in the search box. If you have other questions, please call the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.
