The Network for Strong Communities (NSC) is pleased to announce the recipients of the first-ever Paulie Awards. Presented during NSC’s Momentum Conference to three Missouri organizations that created positive change through collaborative nonprofit work, the award provides financial support while also shining a light on the ways in which these organizations serve their communities. Winners for 2016 are the St. Joseph Youth Alliance from the Northern Region; from the Central Region, the winner was the Metro Theater Company; and the Council for a Healthier Dent County was the Southern Region Winner. The overall statewide Paulie winner was also the Council for a Healthy Dent County. A 2014 Robert Wood County Health Rankings placed Dent County at 108 of 115 counties in Missouri. Recognizing the seriousness of the report, the Council for a Healthy Dent County brought together concerned volunteers and created a task force they divided into five committees: Physical Activity, Food, Community, Youth and Poverty/Unemployment. The Task Force for a Healthier Dent County became a community collaboration spearheaded by Healthy Dent County (HDC) to address these alarming local health demographics. In 2016, Dent County’s ranking went from 108 to 93, according to the County Health Rankings. While a variety of factors contributed to the improvement, the task force efforts certainly played a key role.

The Bonebrake Center of Nature and History, located at 601 North Hickory Street, will present another “Skywatch" on Saturday, November 5th starting about 6:00 p.m. Two of the most interesting things to see will be on ground -- the new kid (and adult) friendly telescopes for use by visitors. Experienced volunteers will be on site to teach people (and youngsters) how to aim and focus these powerful telescopes. Visitors are welcome to bring a telescope or binoculars or just come and view through the many telescopes available at the event. The main requirement is to bring is a curiosity about the universe. The event will be mostly outdoors, so come prepared for the night air. The viewing event depends on good weather and clear skies. If there is cloudy weather, the event will be rescheduled. Interested parties may call 247-0279 on the afternoon of Saturday, November 5th to make sure the skies are going to cooperate! There will be access to the house and light refreshments.  There is no cost but donations are genuinely appreciated!  Phone reservations are requested but not required.
