The Dent County Health Center Board of Trustees met for their regular meeting on Monday, October 24th. Administrator Kendra Mobray provided a VAX-CARE update. The Health Center is now able to provide adult vaccines and bill private insurance for patients. These vaccines include high-dose flu for people age 65 and older and quadrivalent flu vaccine for 6 months of age and older, pneumonia, Tdap, Meningitis, and Zostavax (shingles). In order to provide the shingles and pneumonia vaccines, they must have a signed order from your physician. They will provide vaccines daily from 8:00 in the morning to 4:00 in the afternoon on a walk-in basis. For more information and a complete listing of available vaccines, please call 729-3106 during office hours. Mobray said due to the prolonged delay in receiving a contract from the Department of Health, Healthy Dent County in collaboration with Dent County Health Center, have decided to withdraw from the program. Mobray stated she submitted the local agency plan for WIC to the Department of Health for approval as the contract year begins in October. They are still awaiting approval at this time. Roma Jones and Joan Raulston will attend the annual WIC conference October 26th through the 28th. Mobray did say all lodging inspections have been completed for 2016 year. Mobray reported that influenza activity in Missouri is sporadic, but there have been no reports of positive influenza cases in Dent County to date. According to a report from the Department of Health, it was reported that a domestic kitten lab tested positive recently for rabies in a Missouri county, but not Dent County. She wanted to remind Dent County residents to have their pets vaccinated and try to have them avoid contact with stray animals. The next regular board of trustees meeting date was set for Monday, November 21st, 2016 at 5:00 PM at the Health Center. The meeting was then adjourned.

To reflect estimated changes in the wholesale cost of natural gas as well as a change in the company’s Actual Cost Adjustment (ACA) factor, natural gas customers of Union Electric Company d/b/a Ameren Missouri will see natural gas rates change under a filing that takes effect on November 1, 2016. The ACA factor is a mechanism which tracks any over-collection or under-collection of actual natural gas costs over a 12 month period. The net over or under collected balances are subsequently either refunded or collected the next year. Ameren Missouri residential customers in the Rolla service area, (Rolla, Salem and Owensville) will see natural gas rates increase by about $0.14 per Ccf. About 55% to 60% of a customer’s current natural gas bill reflects the cost of natural gas from wholesale suppliers. The wholesale of natural gas (the cost your local natural gas company must pay to its suppliers for natural gas) is not regulated by the Missouri Public Service Commission. The wellhead cost of natural gas is unregulated and is primarily driven by supply, demand and weather. The Missouri Public Service Commission does conduct an annual regulatory review to ensure that regulated natural gas companies make prudent decisions in securing natural gas supplies for their customers. Ameren Missouri serves about 128,400 natural gas customers in Missouri.

A safe and sober ride after the party is the best treat you can give yourself and everyone else on the road this Halloween. The Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety wants to remind motorists that law enforcement will be out in full force cracking down on impaired drivers that haven’t gotten the message to Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. Nationwide, Halloween is a particularly deadly holiday due to the high number of impaired drivers on the roads. In 2015, 2 people died and 3 were seriously injured in Missouri traffic crashes on Halloween. To avoid real-life Halloween horrors, remember the following: before the Halloween festivities begin, plan a way to safely get home at the end of the night; always designate a sober driver; if you are impaired, take a taxi, call a sober friend or family member or use public transportation. Walking impaired can be just as dangerous as drunk driving. Designate a sober friend to walk you home, and wear clothing that makes it easy for drivers to see you in the dark; if you see a drunk driver on the road, contact local law enforcement; if you know someone who is about to drive while impaired, take the keys and help them make safe travel arrangements. Missouri law makes it clear that driving while impaired has scary consequences. For more information on highway safety, go to saveMOlives.com.
