The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Courthouse. Beth Frizzell was in representing the Dent County Senior Citizens Service Board with a question relative to budgeting for next year that was answered by the commission. In the road report, District I Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5510, 6240, 5080, 5085, and 5015, two men would be hauling brown rock and one man would be screening it. District II Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done Dent County Road 2210 and 4050, brush would be cut on county roads 5330 and 4050, and materials would be added on county road 2150. Larson went on to say that the opening of Dent County Road 4280 has been postponed until Monday in order to allow the concrete to cure completely. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that on Monday he attended a public meeting in West Plains concerning the proposed purchase of the nearly 2,500 acre Frederick Ranch in Oregon County for a state park using Lead Settlement Trust Fund dollars. The negative economic impact of the purchase was noted by Oregon County’s Alton Schools Superintendent Eric Allen, who commented that the loss of the tax dollars from the sale would take away 12% to 15% of the discretionary spending of his district. Skiles, along with others in attendance, questioned why the funds were being spent in an area that was not affected by lead mining. He also noted that he and Commissioner Purcell attended the National Park Service public meeting in Eminence Monday night and that all three Commissioners attended the NPS meeting in Salem on Wednesday. Skiles noted that MRPC would be holding a Business Fair on Tuesday, November 3rd at The Center, 1200 Holloway Street, in Rolla. Mrs. Penrod was in with a question about the size of the road signs on Dent County Roads 2240 and 2250. Commissioner Larson said that he would check with the Road and Bridge Department, but that the economic impact of getting all larger signs would be prohibitive. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that bills were being approved and that her office has started working on the 2016 budget. Commissioner Larson commented that he was very concerned about the current financial position of the Salem Memorial District Hospital, as well as essentially all rural hospitals, and that citizens need to contact their state and federal legislators about addressing the problem. Larson, Purcell and Skiles agreed that the situation is a direct result of governmental regulations relative to the Affordable Care Act. Mel Woods, COPEN LED Services, along with Jeff Davis and David Roberts were in to share information about COPEN’s LED replacement fixtures for fluorescent tubes. Woods said that their product would result in a savings of 60% to 75% over fluorescents. The Commissioners agreed to have COPEN’s tubes installed in the County Clerk’s office for demonstration, have an evaluation of the Courthouse and report back with a proposal. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department has released some reports. On Tuesday, October 20th at 2:52 in the afternoon, an officer was sent to Phil-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 29-year old male and a 25-year old male both of Salem for stealing alcohol. The two suspects were issued summonses to appear in court and were released. Later that night at 8:12, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to identity theft. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown from another state had used the identity of another to set up cable services and ran up a bill in the amount of $947.00 before the victim was contacted by a debt collector. Then at 8:30 that same night, an  officer transported a 31-year old female of Union from the Franklin County Jail to the Dent County Jail in lieu of an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem.
