Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder hosted a town hall meeting Monday afternoon in West Plains to allow fellow elected representatives and members of the public to voice their concerns about the Missouri Department of Natural Resources' plan to purchase land in Oregon County along the Eleven Point River with settlement money earmarked for land reclamation in Missouri's Lead Belt. The overwhelming sentiment expressed by the 125 attendees at Monday's Town Hall meeting in West Plains was this park plan is a bad idea. State Representatives Robert Ross, Sonya Murray Anderson, Shawn Rhoads, Paul Fitzwater and Jeff Pogue and former Representative Mike Dethrow were on hand Monday to express their opposition to the plan. Representatives from the offices of Senators Dan Brown and Mike Cunningham, as well delegations from the Oregon, Shannon, Dent, Howell and Texas County Commissions, school district officials and concerned citizens from the region also attended. After opening remarks by Kinder and the other elected officials, 22 people stepped to the microphone to voice opposition to the program. Most of the concerns dealt with the loss of tax revenue to Oregon County and the fact that 20% of the county is already owned by the federal and state government. No one spoke in favor of the proposal. Michael Slack of Oregon County pointed out that the DNR is having trouble maintaining the parks Missouri already has. State Rep. Robert Ross said the General Assembly allocated $40 million last year for state park maintenance, a big portion of which was spent on the Camp Zoe project, a new state park in Shannon County.

Superintendent Larry Johnson of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways welcomed a crowd of about 100 people to the open house meeting held at the Salem City Hall Auditorium Wednesday night.
