An accident happened in Phelps County Monday at 12:11 in the afternoon that took the life of a man from Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, a 2010 Harley Davison motorcycle driven westbound by 67-year old James Finazzo of Rolla and a 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven westbound by 60-year old Donald Ware of Rolla, were both stopped on Highway 72 attempting to make a left hand turn when they were struck from behind by a 1998 Ford Explorer driven westbound by 51-year old Jerry Huskey of O’Fallon, Missouri. Debris from the crash went into the eastbound lanes and struck a 2010 Mazda CX-9 driven by 49-year old Lisa J. Haller of Rolla. Finazzo was pronounced dead at the scene by Phelps County Coroner Scott Jarrett. His body was taken to the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Ware suffered serious injuries and was flown by Mercy Air to the University Hospital in Columbia. Huskey suffered moderate injuries and was taken by EMS to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center while Haller had minor injuries and sought her own treatment. The Harley Davidson motorcycles were totaled and removed from the scene by C&C Towing, and the Ford Explorer was totaled and removed from the scene by Advance Towing of Rolla. The Mazda had minor damage and was driven from the scene. The Missouri State Highway Patrol was assisted by the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department, Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department, the Dent County Sheriff’s Department, Rolla Police Department and Rolla Rural Fire Department.

An accident happened in Dent County at 4:55 Tuesday afternoon on Route P about four miles southeast of Salem that left two Salem teens in serious condition. According to the highway patrol report, a 1997 Chevy Blazer driven southbound by 16-year old Kirsten Strebe of Salem overcorrected while driving and the Blazer overturned, traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. Kirsten Strebe and 13-year old Elias Strebe both suffered serious injuries. Elias was flown by Air Evac to St. Louis Children’s Hospital while Kirsten was flown by Mercy Air to Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. Both teenagers were wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The Blazer was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing. The highway patrol was assisted by the Dent County Sheriff’s Office and Dent County Fire Protection District.

The 53rd annual Missouri Community Betterment Conference was held in Columbia this past weekend. The Awards Banquet was held Monday and Salem placed 4th in Category 4 behind Lamar, Perryville and Cameron who actually won the Gene Speichlinger Award as the Community of the Year. St. James captured 1st place in Category 3 and Steelville finished 4th in Category 2. However, the Steelville Youth Group took 1st place in Category 2. Individual awards were presented and two people from Salem were honored: Mikayla Cahill with a Youth Leadership Award and Alex Sellers with an Adult Leadership Award. Congratulations to all the communities and individuals honored and spotlighted at the conference.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released reports. On Monday, October 17th, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Highway 19 near McDonalds. It was discovered that the driver of the vehicle had an active warrant for his arrest and as a result of the stop 31-year old Kristopher Schafer of Salem was arrested on a Dent County warrant for theft and a Jasper County warrant for shoplifting. He was transported to the Dent County Jail and was incarcerated. On Tuesday, October 18th, a female walked into the sheriff's office wishing to report domestic violence. It was discovered that 17-year old Owen White, of Salem had thrown her to the ground by her hair. He then proceeded to choke, punch, and kick her. A warrant was issued for the arrest of Owen White and he was taken into custody in Pulaski County on Sunday, October 23rd. He was charged with Domestic Assault in the 2nd Degree with a $7,000 cash only bond. On Thursday, October 20th, deputies conducted a traffic stop on Dent County Road 6150. As a result of the stop, 25-year old Danny Lato of Salem was arrested for driving while having his license revoked. He was transported to the Dent County Jail, fingerprinted and released. On Monday, October 24th, deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle at Shawnee Mac Conservation Area for trespassing. During the traffic stop, the passenger, Mr. Levi Cardwell of Salem, was discovered to have an active warrant for his arrest for Failure to Appear. Cardwell was taken into custody without incident and is currently incarcerated pending court appearance or bond posting.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a disturbance, a shoplifter, theft and theft of fuel. On Thursday, October 13th at 11:20 a.m. an officer transported a 19-year old male of Rolla from the Phelps County Sheriffs Department to Dent County Jail in lieu of an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. He was incarcerated pending a court appearance.That night at 10:17, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 200 block of South Jackson in reference to a disturbance. The report led to the arrest of a 36-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Friday, October 14th at 7:50 a.m. an officer was dispatched to Country Mart in reference to a shoplifter.  The report led to the arrest of a 24-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise valued $33.89. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. That same morning at 11:03 an officer responded to a residence in the 1000 block of West Franklin in reference to a theft. The report revealed someone unknown took a battery valued $100.00 from a black 1992 Chevrolet truck. Later that same day at 4:09 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Phil-Mart in reference to a theft of fuel.  The report revealed the driver of a blue Ford extended cab F150 had pumped fuel valued $55.50 and left without paying. The Salem Lady Softball Tigers placed six girls on the MHSFCA All-District teams. Named to the All-District 1st team were infielders Payton Curley and Camryn Pryor, pitcher Kari Hatridge and outfielder Shelby Carr. Named to the All-District 2nd Team were outfielder Kirsten Strebe and utility player Bekah Kirker. Named to the All-Region 2nd team for Salem were Shelby Carr, Kari Hatridge and Camryn Pryor. Congratulations Lady Tigers!

Brian Elliott stopped 23 shots in his return to St. Louis, Johnny Gaudreau and Sam Bennett each had a goal and an assist and the Calgary Flames beat the St. Louis Blues 4-1 on Tuesday night. Elliott had his best save late in the second when he slid his right pad across the crease to rob Nail Yakupov on a rebound attempt. After winning their first three games, the Blues are 1-2-1 in their last four. They will play Detroit Thursday night starting at 6:30 on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for James Anthony Finazzo of Rolla, age 67, will be held Friday at 10:00 at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Rolla. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 6:00  at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Resurrection Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials are suggested to the Backstoppers or Phelps County Community Partnership.

Funeral services for Donald Ray Hyde of Viburnum, age 61, will be held Friday at 12:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Private interment will be in the Fayette City Cemetery in Fayette. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Connor Edward Flint of Rolla, infant, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Maxine Mae White of Salem, age 92, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Friday night. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Phelps County Regional Homecare and Hospice.
