The Dent County Health Center Board of Trustees met Monday at the health center. Sherry Lea from Healthy Dent County came in and addressed the board with the request to act as the fiscal agent for the Million Hearts Grant that Healthy Dent County has submitted to the Department of Health. The grant is for $13,800 and will be utilized to hire a Million Hearts Coordinator to increase public awareness of cardiovascular disease and promote measures to help prevent heart attacks and strokes in the community. After a long discussion, the Board approved to provide oversight of the grant with a stipulation that weekly time sheets be submitted in addition to a report of the tasks completed by the Coordinator which is the standard policy of the Health Center. Administrator Jane Jadwin reported the Public Health Emergency Preparedness grant of $35,508 that was submitted by the local public health agencies in Region I was approved and a table top exercise was held that included regional public health agencies, hospitals, fire departments, law enforcement and others. Jadwin reported that there have been a total of eight laboratory positive flu tests. Flu shots are available at the Health Center for $30 on a walk-in basis. They will bill Medicare but you do need to bring your card. It was reported that local participation in WIC is increasing. WIC has changed the food package effective October 1st to add more variety to the food choices. Roma Jones reported on the new regulation that requires anyone planning to open a new food establishment to complete an application 30 days in advance to have an inspection prior to the opening. Any facility that does not follow this process will remained closed until the requirements are met. It was also reported that preparations are underway to begin the “Choosing the Best Abstinence” program for all 6th graders in all Dent County Schools. Joan Raulston is coordinating the program and will start presentations in December. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning at 9:00 in the Courthouse for their regular meeting.  In the road report, District II crews will be working on the low water crossing on Dent County Road 4280 and the road will be until Thursday. Commissioner Gary Larson went on to say that the newly poured concrete needs adequate time to cure so travelers are asked to observe the closure. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder has called a public meeting today at 2:00 about the proposed acquisition of the 2,463 acre Frederick Creek Ranch in Oregon County in the West Plains Civic Center.  Skiles also reminded citizens of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways Roads and Trails Management Plan public meetings will be today in Eminence and Wednesday, October 28th in Salem with both meetings from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Skiles said Dent County’s three representatives on the Transportation Advisory Committee at MRPC are Ray Walden, Gary Brown and himself, and that the county needs to appoint an alternate and he proposed that Bob Parsons be appointed to the position. The motion passed 3 – 0 to approve the appointment of Parsons. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported on Tuesday November 17th, a representative of Senator Roy Blunt’s office would conduct a listening post at the Courthouse from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Curley said Wednesday phone bids for 7,000 gallons of diesel were taken with County Fuels providing the low bid $1.67 per gallon that was accepted by the commission.

The Salem Police Department released their latest reports. On Friday, October 9th at 10:00 in the morning, an officer arrested a 23-year old Salem female on an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem.  She was taken into custody at the Salem Police Department and was later released after a guilty plea and paying all fines and costs. On Thursday, October 15th at 3:34 in the afternoon, an officer took a report of a stolen license plate. It was reported stolen from a trailer that was parked in the 100 block of North Rhodes. That night at 8:41, an officer was detailed to Casey's General Store in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed a male suspect took merchandise valued at $1.00 and left the store without paying. Later that same night at 10:18, an officer was conducting an investigation involving the theft of utilities. During the investigation a 29-year old Salem male was found to be in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.  He was taken into custody and incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Dylan Wisdom hit Cameron Howard with a 16- yard touchdown pass in the 1st quarter and Derek McClain sealed the game with a 13-yard run late in the 4th quarter as the Salem Tigers advanced to the second round of District play with a 14-6 win over St. James. Ryan Harlow had an outstanding game for St. James completing 16-25 passes for 231 yards and a touchdown to Dawson Lynch in the 2nd quarter. St. James three times was inside the Salem 20- yard line and failed to score as the Salem defense rose to the challenge. Salem is now 5-5 on the year and they will travel to Ava to face the Bears Friday night at 7:00. St. James finished the season with a 2-8 record.

Lorenzo Cain scored on a single by Eric Hosmer from 1st base in the bottom the 8th inning for the winning run that propelled the Kansas City Royals to the World Series as they beat Toronto, 4-3 Friday night and won the series 4 games to 2. The World Series starts Tuesday night at Kansas City against the New York Mets.

Mikhail Grabovski scored his first goal of the season 4 minutes into overtime to lead the New York Islanders past the St. Louis Blues Saturday night, 3-2. Alex Steen and Colton Parayko scored for the Blues who rallied in the 3rd period only to lose the game in OT. The Blues will host Tampa Bay Tuesday night at 6:30 on KSMO.

Todd Gurley rushed for 128 yards and his first two NFL touchdowns, helping the St. Louis Rams put away the Cleveland Browns 24-6 on Sunday. The Rams are now 3-3 on the year.

Alex Smith threw for 251 yards and a TD completing 21-of-32 passes, while Charcandrick West added 110 yards rushing and his first TD as KC (2-5) beat Pittsburgh Sunday, 23-13.

The Missouri Tigers dropped their third straight loss falling to Vanderbilt by the score of 10-3. This makes three straight games that Missouri has not scored a touchdown. Missouri is 4-4 on the year.

Funeral services for Bernard Carl Faulkner of Bixby, age 88, was held Monday at 2:00 at the Viburnum Christian Church. Interment was in the Boss Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum.

Funeral Services for Herman Preston Asher, age 80, of Bixby will be Tuesday at 2:00 P.M at the Wilson Mortuary Viburnum Chapel. Visitation for Herman Preston will be Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M at the Wilson Mortuary Viburnum Chapel. Interment will be in the Crocker-Stricklin Cemetery with full Military Honors.

Funeral services for Jesse Leroy “Lee” Geary of Salem, age 78, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 Wednesday. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the Shepherd’s Nook.
