Missouri Governor Jay Nixon was in Salem Monday to present the City of Salem and Dent County with the Work Force Ready Certification. Dent County became the 36th county in Missouri to achieve this status where the workforce development is linked to education that matches individuals to jobs based on their skill levels. Nixon says Missouri Work Ready Communities are getting attention from companies looking to locate where the workforce meets their needs. He was very complimentary of the cooperative effort of the city and county governments as well as the R-80 school in helping Dent County become certified in what he calls a very difficult process. Nixon says there are about 30 more communities currently trying becoming Work Force Ready in Missouri.

An accident happened Tuesday morning at 6:40 in Dent County on Highway 32 at the junction of Route P. according to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Chevy Blazer driven westbound by 30-year old Kyle Dickson of Salem, slowed to turn and was struck from behind by a 1999 Jeep Cherokee driven by 35-year old Amber Hogan of Salem who was not paying attention at the time of the accident. The Jeep Cherokee overturned in the roadway and caught fire. Suffering serious injuries was Kyle Dickson who was airlifted by Mercy Air Ambulance to the University Hospital in Columbia, while Hogan suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem Ambulance. Everyone was wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident.

The Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday night at the city hall council chambers. City Administrator Ray Walden said there have been power outages in town due to the high winds. If you have an outage after normal business hours that is not an emergency, please call the Salem Police Department at 729-4242. It your situation is an emergency, call 9-1-1. Walden said he attended a roundtable discussion with the Missouri Utility Alliance here broadband was discussed and also attended the Salem Chamber of Commerce luncheon on October 11th where the GRO initiative was discussed. Walden also said he met with members from DNR and the engineers from Archer Engineering and discussed the Wastewater Treatment Plant improvements. The engineering part is being paid for by a $50,000 DNR grant which has been awarded to the city. Walden said the MRPC will have the annual awards dinner Thursday night at Belle and the Missouri Community Betterment Awards banquet will be Sunday and Monday. He also said Bonnie Prigge and Preston Kramer will be at the commissioners meeting on November 10th to discuss transportation needs in Dent County. Mayor Brad Nash was asked about Kingdom Kia being in town at Wal-Mart and he asked City Clerk Mary Happel if they had applied for the proper licenses and she said they had followed all local and state guidelines. Mayor Nash also read a letter from Richard LaBrash about the professionalism and courtesy of the cemetery staff. The Board approved Bill #3316 making adjustments to the 2017 fiscal year budget. The board also approved a request from Parks and Recreation Board President Stan Podorski to apply for a Transportation Alternatives Program grant to provide improved handicapped accessible sidewalks to the Al Brown Fields and Salem City Park as well as a sidewalk from Vandevort Drive to the Salem Community Center. If the grant is approved, the construction must be done within 23 months of approval which means funds could be budgeted in two fiscal years. The grant application is due on November 1st and it is an 80-20 grant and the 20% match by the city must be in funds. Podorski will bring the information to the Park Board meeting Thursday for their review and discussion before they make a decision if they want to proceed on the grant application. The board approved the purchase of 69 tons of cold mix from Capital Materials for $4,739.61 before the board went into closed session.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released reports. On Wednesday, October 12th, deputies were dispatched the 2100 block of County Road 3210 for a report of a domestic disturbance in progress. Upon the deputies arrival, it was learned that a male subject was in the residence with a firearm threatening to commit suicide. It was also discovered that the residence is a day care and 12 juveniles were inside. Deputies were able to get the children and the caretaker removed from the residence. It took several minutes to get the suicidal subject to exit the residence. When he did, he had a pistol pointed against his head. Deputies were able to give commands and the subject dropped the pistol.  He then attempted to fight deputies before he was taken into custody.  As a result, 31-year old Ryan Whitehouse of Rolla was arrested.  Whitehouse was transported to a psychiatric center for mental evaluation. Whitehouse has been charged with 12 counts of child endangerment and one count of unlawful use of a weapon. Whitehouse’s bond has been set at $200,000 cash only.

Henrik Sedin scored 1:40 into overtime season after Bo Horvat tied the game late in the third period, lifting Vancouver over the St. Louis Blues 2-1 on Tuesday night. Vladamir Tarasenko scored in the 2nd period for St. Louis, and Jake Allen had 24 stops. The Blues will be in Edmonton Thursday night at 7:30 on KSMO Radio.

Lefty reliever Zach Duke, who made 28 appearances for the Cardinals in 2016, will not make another in 2017. General manager John Mozeliak confirmed that Duke recently underwent surgery to repair his ulnar collateral ligament as well as a forearm flexor muscle in his left arm. Recovery from the surgery is expected to take between 12 and 18 months.

Funeral services for Zelda Parker of Boss, age 98, will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 at the Macedonia Baptist Church in Boss. Visitation will be today from 5-8:00 PM. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Mcspadden Funeral Home in Bunker.

Funeral services for Iva May Fernandes of Salem, age 74, will be held Thursday at noon at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 10:00 until service time. Memorials may be made the New Harmony Cemetery. Interment will be in the New Harmony Cemetery.

Graveside services for Catherine G. Sheppard of Boss, age 82, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at Myers Cemetery in Oates Missouri. Arrangements are under the direction of the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker.

Funeral services for Bill Krewson of Licking, age 76, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the United Methodist Church in Licking. Visitation will be from 12:00 until service time. All arrangements are under the direction of the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.

Memorial services for William Michael Click Jr. of Sullivan, age 49, will be Friday from 1:00 to 3:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Memorial may be made to the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James for funeral expenses.

Graveside Memorial Services for Joe Ray of Salem, age 68, will be held Saturday at 3:00 at the Patterson Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
