An accident occurred at 10:55 Thursday morning in Dent County on Highway 119 about a mile north of Montauk State Park that took the life of a Cape Girardeau man. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Workhorse Motor home driven southbound by 74-year old Kevin Gerlach of Cape Girardeau lost control. He went off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. Gerlach was pronounced dead at the scene at noon Thursday by Dent County Deputy Coroner Ben Pursifull and his body was released to the Dent County Coroner. The motor home was totaled and removed by Whitakers Towing. He was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident.

An accident happened Saturday afternoon at 4:00 in Dent County on Highway 32 about 3.5 miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Subaru Forester driven by 28-year old Philip Tschirhart of Cadillac, Michigan was passing another vehicle when he overcorrected and went off the right side of the roadway. He then struck a pole and overturned. Two occupants in the vehicle from Rocheport, Missouri suffered injuries: 24-year old Jennifer Hovis suffered moderate injuries and 33-year old Treven Smith suffered serious injuries. Hovis transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital and Smith was flown to the University Hospital in Columbia. The vehicle was totaled in the accident and was removed from the scene by Schwartz Towing. Everyone in the vehicles was wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident.

An accident happened Friday afternoon at 3:45 in Phelps County on Phelps County Road 2030 about four miles north of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Dodge Ram driven eastbound by 38-year old Brenda Foulke of Rolla, failed to yield to a 2000 Blue Bird School Bus driven northbound by 53-year old Regina Jones of Rolla, causing the school bus to strike the Dodge Ram. Both vehicles had minor damages from the accident. Foulke suffered minor injuries and was taken by the Phelps County Ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Dodge was driven from the scene while the School Bus was towed from the scene by C&C Towing of Rolla.

An accident happened Saturday morning at 12:30 in Phelps County on Route E about two miles north of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Dodge Caravan driven by 37-year old Dawn Perry of Rolla traveled off the right side of the roadway. Perry overcorrected and the Dodge crossed the roadway and traveled off the left side of the road where the Caravan struck a ditch and overturned several times before striking a fence and a gate. The Dodge Caravan finally came to rest on its top in a field. Perry suffered only minor injuries and was transported by the Phelps County Ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. The vehicle was totaled in the accident and was removed from the scene by Dishman’s Towing. Perry was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

An accident occurred at 9:45 on the morning of Friday, September 30th on Highway 32 in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by Courtney Thompson of Salem and owned by Car Mart of Rolla was backing east from a parking spot in the Wal-Mart parking lot. A pedestrian was walking south toward Wal-Mart. The Chevrolet backed into the pedestrian with the trunk. The pedestrian stated her backing was hurting and she was going to transport herself to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. There was not apparent damage to the Chevrolet Cobalt. The traffic accident was not investigated at the scene and is a delayed report.

Governor Jay Nixon is scheduled to be in Salem today to recognize Dent County’s Certified Work Ready status. The announcement will take place at 1:30 pm in the high school library and wrap up about 2:00. Missouri’s Certified Work Force initiative is a voluntary effort to align workforce and education to meet the economic needs of the state and local communities. The vision for the Certified Work Ready Communities is to attract, retain, and develop a workforce with education and fundamental skills such as Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics, and Locating Information that will prepare workers and help businesses to succeed in the 21st Century. This effort for Work Ready Communities will result in strengthening existing businesses, attracting new businesses, growing jobs, and developing a strong talent pipeline for the state’s future growth nationally and globally.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00 PM. After approval of past agendas and the current agenda, City Administrator Ray Walden will update the Board on current issues and projects concerning the City of Salem, followed by Mayor Bard Nash’s report. Then during the introduction and reading of bills and resolutions, Bill # 3316 an ordinance amending the budget FYE 2017, which is required to meet state statutes, will be presented for the Board’s approval. In new and miscellaneous business, Walden will present a description of a proposal for a TAP Grant application through MoDOT and then Superintendent Gary Glenn will be requesting approval for a bill over $3,000 for 69 ton of cold mix from Capital Materials that totals $4,739.61. The Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing contracts and personnel. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

The Salem Football Tigers rolled up 367 yards rushing yards and added another 103 yards in the air as they routed Cabool Friday night at Senior Night at the SHS Football Field, 39-7. J.J. McGowan ran for 167 yards and a touchdown and scored on an 83-yard strike from quarterback Cameron Camden for another to lead Salem. Xavier Elwood rushed for two scores and Eli Floyd ran for a touchdown as Salem finishes the regular season with a 5-4 record. They ended up 5th in Class 3, District 1 by 1.13 points and will be on the road at Potosi Friday night starting at 7:00 to face the Trojans. The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will be at Sullivan tonight to face the St. Clair Lady Bulldogs in the opening round of Class 3, District 9 play starting at 6:15. The winner of that match will play the winner of the Sullivan/St. James match Tuesday night at 6:15.

Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and an assist, Carter Hutton stopped 33 shots and the St. Louis Blues beat the New York Rangers 3-2 on Saturday night. Paul Statsny and Alex Pietrangelo also had goals for St. Louis. The Rangers outshot St. Louis 35-18 in the game and 15-0 in the third period alone. The Blues will be at Vancouver Tuesday night with the pre-game show at 8:30 on KSMO Radio.

Jalen Tabor and Quincy Wilson returned interceptions for touchdowns, helping No. 18 Florida beat Missouri 40-14 on Saturday and move into first place in the Southeastern Conference's Eastern Division. Drew Lock threw for a meager 39 yards and the offense notched just 6 first downs. The result was a ninth consecutive conference loss for the Tigers who are now 2-4 on the year and 0-3 in the SEC. They will host Middle Tennessee Saturday in their Homecoming game at Faurot Field at 3:00.

Spencer Ware ran for a career-high 131 yards and a touchdown and Alex Smith picked apart Oakland's struggling defense in the Kansas City Chiefs' 26-10 win over the Raiders on Sunday. Smith completed 19 of 22 passes for 224 yards, Jamaal Charles and big defensive lineman Dontari Poe each ran for scores and the Chiefs forced two turnovers by Derek Carr to dampen a fast start to the season by the Raiders (4-2), who are trying to end a 13-year playoff drought. The Chiefs will host New Orleans on Sunday.

Funeral services Mary Lou Seneker of Salem, age 88, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be it the North Lawn Cemetery.

Iva May Fernandes of Salem, age 74, will be held Thursday at noon at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 10:00 until service time. Memorials may be made the New Harmony Cemetery. Interment will be in the New Harmony Cemetery.

Graveside Memorial Services for Joe Ray of Salem, age 68, will be held Saturday at 3:00 at the Patterson Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
