missourinetLOCAL NEWS:

The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday for their regular meeting at the courthouse. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson was not in attendance due an illness in his family. Rick Mannis was in attendance and asked 1st District Commissioner Dennis Purcell to report on his meeting on October 12th with the Soil and Water Districts Commission in Jefferson City (a state agency appointed by the governor) about the possibility of private water wells, both residential and agricultural, being monitored. Purcell said he got on the agenda to ask the commission about this. He was told they were developing a state water plan to address agriculture through the year 2060. There would be a two-year study through the University of Missouri that will cost $3,000,000. Their main focus was on the northern part of the state where row crops are grown with a large amount of water usage. They told Purcell the water usage in Dent County for livestock was, in their words, “inconsequential” in the overall process. Purcell asked who owns the water under the property we own, the property owner or the state, and he did not get a response by the commission. Purcell said that the commission, in order to have some input in this study, agreed by a 3-1-1 vote to allocate $300,000 from their budget toward the study. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams said sales tax monies received in October were $67,993.67, while last year the county received $77,007.31 in October. Yet, the county is still ahead of last year’s collections by $23,417.54 which is about a 3.45% increase. The Road and Bridge Fund tax monies received were $31,427.87 which brings the year to date totals to $323,486.76. In the road report, Purcell reported grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5680 and 6470 with brush being cut on county road 2150. Two men will be hauling brown rock. Road Supervisor Sam Gorman reported for District 2 and said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2050, 2060, 3220, 5280, 5300 and 6160. He stated one man would be hauling rock from the creek while another would be screening brown rock. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said he and the other two commissioners attended the South Central County Commission meeting in Houston last Friday. He said the unanimous discussion was on the prosecutor’s salary and retirement increase, and they voted to have the CCAM investigate any legal action that can be taken and pursue legislative relief and make it a priority. He also said Aaron Jeffries from the Missouri Department of Conservation gave a presentation on the feral hog situation. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said absentee voting is going on now at her office in the courthouse and will continue until November 7th. She said 250 people have already voted absentee. Curley said the last day to request a ballot by mail is October 26th. She went on to say she spoke to the Green Forest 4-H group and registered three voters while there. She discussed the importance of youth participating in the election process. Curley did say people are welcome to stop by her office and pick up a sample ballot, or they can read it in the Salem News next week. With the number of ballot issues this year, she recommends people look at the ballot and read about the issues before voting. Also, if you have changed addresses, you need to stop by the county clerk’s office to update your voter registration card, or if you are not sure where you vote, contact her office at 729-4144. The commission went into closed session just after 11:00 to discuss contracts. After closed session, the commission voted to approve a contract for services with Shive-Hattery Architect, Engineering and Consulting firm for a new Dent County jail/justice center. The contract for services covers all aspects of the project and will begin immediately. At the last meeting, MFA Oil received the low bid on unleaded gasoline at $1.759 per gallon and Phil-Mart received the low bid for 7,000 gallons of diesel at $1.72 per gallon. Also Sean Bieler from the Mark Twain National Forest came in to discuss the Huzzah Pond Title II project agreement. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Monday morning at the courthouse at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
