An accident occurred at 7:15 Wednesday morning in Texas County on Highway 32 about two miles east of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 2008 Chrysler Sebring driven by 48-year old Scott Calvin of Salem was traveling east on Highway 32. The accident occurred as the Sebring traveled off the left side of the roadway, struck a driveway embankment, a tree and then overturned. Calvin suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Texas County ambulance. He was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The Chrysler Sebring was totaled and removed by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their October meeting Tuesday evening at the fire station. After approval of the minutes from the previous meeting the Board then reviewed and approved bills, reviewed their budget and also their calendar of upcoming events including ladder and pump testing scheduled yet this month. In the monthly reimbursement report there were a total of 22 calls that included four calls for structure fires, one call for a brush fire, three calls for car fires, two calls for first responders, five calls for a vehicle accident, one call for mutual aid, three calls for a fire alarm, two calls for training and one other call. Year to date there have been 204 calls. There was no old or new business, but during reports, Fire Chief Brad Nash reported on the damage to Engine #83. It has no structural damage and parts will be replaced to bring the engine back into operation. The repair bill will be around $4,900, plus towing. The insurance company will be paying all but the deductible of $1,000. The truck is to be repaired and back in operation in about two weeks. The new brush truck is at Color World for painting and is still not finished with no time of completion given. The Board asked Chief Nash to check into this truck, as the truck is needed. The Board then set their November meeting for Tuesday, November 1st at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Salem Police Department released reports involving theft of fuel, theft, and shoplifters. On Monday, October 3rd at 12:41 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Casey's General Store located on Highway 32 East in reference to a theft of fuel. The report revealed the driver of a 2002 Ford pumped fuel valued at $22.89 and left without paying. Then at 3:34 that same afternoon, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1000 block of West Coffman in reference to a theft. The report revealed someone unknown took a package valued at $13.99 that had been delivered by UPS from the porch of a residence. That same afternoon at 4:13, an officer located a 36-year old Salem male who had an active fugitive arrest warrant from Rolla near Highway 19 and Franklin. He was taken into custody on the warrant and later released with a new date to appear in court after posting bond. Late that night at 10:53, an officer was sent to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The report led to the arrest of a 31-year old female of Park Hills for stealing merchandise valued at $89.76. She was issued summonses to appear in court and released. On Tuesday, October 4th at 12:41 in the early morning, an officer transported a 17-year old Rolla female from the Phelps County Jail to the Dent County Jail in lieu of an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. She was incarcerated pending a court appearance. Early that same morning at 1:31, an officer was detailed to Casey's General Store located on Highway 32 East in reference to a shoplifter. The report led to the arrest of a 28-year old Salem female for stealing merchandise valued at $14.59.  She was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reminds hunters they must show proof of their Hunter Education certification number to buy firearms hunting permits if their certification number is not already in the Department’s permits system. A hunter education course is required for hunters born on or after Jan. 1, 1967 who hunt with firearms. Proof of certification from any state is acceptable. Hunters can find their “Hunter Ed #” on the front of their Missouri Conservation Heritage Card, or on their temporary Hunter Education certificate. If hunters do not have one of these, they can call the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Hunter Education or Permit Services staff at 573-751-4115. If you need to get a Hunter Education Permit and have not attended a class, courses are on the mdc.mo.gov website. A course will be held at the Salem Community Center at the Armory on Friday, October 21st from 5:30 to 9:30. You must be 11 years of age by October 21st to register. Free study manuals can be picked up at Indian Trail Gun and Archery on Highway 19 north, at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Center at 202 North Main in Salem or at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. The Salem Cross Country Team will run in the Mountain Grove Invitational today starting at 4:00. Their last meet will be the Ava Invitational on October 24th at 4:00.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers lost to the Lady Bears of Willow Springs in two straight games Tuesday night to fall to 5-22-1 on the year and 1-6 in the SCA Conference. The Lady Tigers will be off until Monday when they will face St. Clair at 6:15 in Sullivan. The cost of admission is $5.00 if you are over six years of age.

Vladimir Tarasenko had two goals and an assist, and the St. Louis Blues beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 on Wednesday in an opening-night matchup of Central Division rivals. Kevin Shattenkirk and Paul Stastny each had a power-play goal and two assists for the Blues, who eliminated the Blackhawks in seven games in the first round of the playoffs in April. The Blues will host the Minnesota Wild tonight starting at 6:30 on KSMO in their home opener.

Funeral services for Jennifer Lynn (Adamick) Snider of Pleasant Hope, formerly of Salem, age 42, will be held Friday at 10:00 am at the Green Lawn North Funeral Home in Springfield, MO. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 t0 8:00 at the Green Lawn Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Hazelwood Cemetery in Springfield, MO.

Graveside services for Betty Jean Campbell, of Salem, age 78, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Myrtle Cemetery in Myrtle, Mo. All arrangements are under the direction of the Carter Funeral Home in Thayer.

Funeral services for Calvin L. Becklenberg of Vichy, age 87, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Rolla. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Country Side Memorial Garden in Owensville.

Funeral services for Robert Eugene Durrett of St. James, age 83, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the St. James Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 Friday. Interment will be in the Matlock Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Rolla Sheltered Workshop.
