At the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon Tuesday at SBU in Salem, City of Salem Administrator Ray Walden gave a short history of the economic development process in Salem from the beginning of the year including the “Feels Like Home” Tour back in May and the Community Foundation of the Ozarks USDA three-year grant for economic development. Walden said Jumpstart out of Cleveland, Ohio was chosen to help define the economic strategies for three communities in Missouri and Salem is one of them. The Growth of the Regional Ozarks Program steering committee has been meeting for months now and they have decided on three reachable projects to start the process. The first was an internship program at the Salem High School where Principal Marty Anderson described the process as a partnership between education and the community that will build strong relationships. The unpaid program will be for one or two hour blocks where the student will receive credit. The school is hoping to have ten students in the program by second semester. The students will fill out applications with their interests and businesses who would like an intern must fill out applications as to the type of person they are looking for. If a match can be found, an interview will be set up between the two. Currently, Anderson says they are looking for more businesses willing to make the commitment to the program. A.J. Schafer then discussed the downtown Street Scape he has created that would feature outside dining, trees benches and great curb appeal. He said the only way this could get off the ground is if everyone gets on board including the City of Salem, Dent County Commission, not-for-profits and all businesses. He said to capture the increase in tourism through Salem expected by the opening of Echo Bluff State Park, the city needs to provide a showpiece to capture people and the downtown area would be a perfect location to become a center of business and commerce. Also attending was Travin Shelton from the Small Business & Technology Development Center at Missouri S&T to talk about business succession, either from selling a business or leaving it to family or transitioning it to someone else. Shelton said they hope to hold an educational training in Salem to help people get ready for the change as 2/3rds of all businesses in Salem will be in a transitional state in the next five years. Basically, they said you should prepare for the transition five years ahead of time if you plan on selling and about ten years if leaving it within the family. If you are interested in being involved with any of these programs or would like to be a part of the internship program, contact Ray Walden at the city administrative offices at 729-4811.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct a special meeting this morning at the district administrative office boardroom beginning at 11:45. After approval of the agenda, the Board will then vote to go into executive session for the purpose of discussing student discipline. The meeting will then be adjourned.
