The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of September. During the month, they wrote two equipment repair orders, 21 summons to appear in court, 21 warning tickets, and 17 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 16 accidents, two assaults, two burglaries, one report of child abuse, one report of child molestation, three reports of disorderly conduct, one report of domestic assault, eight reports of domestic violence, three reports of driving while revoked and/or suspended, one report of a mine on possession of intoxicants. The department also investigated two reports of a missing person, one report for an open container, 10 reports of property damage, one report of receiving stolen property, two reports of resisting and/or interfering with an arrest, 16 reports of stealing, one report of tampering, and one report of unlawful use of a weapon and/or firearm. They also investigated one report of possession of amphetamine, one report of possession of benzodiazepine, one report of possession of heroin, one report of possession of marijuana, two reports of possession of opium and/or derivative, and two reports of possession of drug paraphernalia.   The police department received 1,579 calls for service during the month, handled 153 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 70 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 24 hours in court testifying, and four hours as court bailiff. The calls in September included nine calls for escorts, five calls for an intoxicated driver, eight calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, one intoxicated pedestrian call, 16 calls for domestic disputes, and six calls for a wrecker. There were three 911 calls, seven calls for a peace disturbance, six calls for alarms sounding, four calls for fights in progress, 16 ambulance assist calls, two fire calls and three calls for property damage.  The Salem Police Department drove a total of 7,149 miles and arrested 17 males and 9 females during the month of September. The Salem Police Department participated in the DEA Drug Take Back Program and collected 35 pounds of medication dropped off for destruction.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their meeting Tuesday evening at the fire station. After approval of the agenda and the minutes from the previous meeting, the Board reviewed and approved bills as well as reviewed their calendar of events. The monthly reimbursement report for September showed a total of 22 calls came in that included: two calls for structure fires, one call for a car fire, three calls for a landing zone, five calls were for first responders, one call was for mutual aid, three calls were for haz mat and two calls were for training. The total calls for the year is at 208. There was no old or new business brought before the Board and during reports is was noted that pump testing is now completed with everything having passed. Ladder testing has been scheduled for this month and the Dent County Fire Protection District is currently taking bids for propane. The Board then set their next meeting for Tuesday, November 3rd at the fire station beginning at 6:00 PM and the meeting was then adjourned.

The Ozark National Scenic Riverways will bring the Ozark past to life during the Haunting in the Hills event to be held Saturday, October 10th at Alley Spring.  The FREE event features folkway demonstrations, re-enactments, hands-on activities, food vendors, and traditional dancing, bluegrass and folk music. Local skilled crafts people will demonstrate from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.  Experience Ozark pioneer folkways and traditions such as basket making, weaving, spinning, wood carving, blacksmithing, bee keeping, chair caning and the making of household supplies of soap, candles, rope, brooms, and apple butter. Learn about Ozark natural and cultural history from local organizations. The Alley area will be filled with toe-tapping bluegrass and folk music. Current River Bluegrass will perform at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., followed by Buzzard Run playing at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.  Watch and learn some traditional Ozark dance moves by joining in on the square dance demonstrations. The Grand Western Squares will be dancing at 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The Hoe Downers perform at 11:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Wear your dancing shoes and bring a blanket or lawn chair for the entertainment.  Young people can become Ozark pioneers by trying their hands at dipping candles, making rope, or shelling corn from the cob. When night falls, a very different setting emerges during the Tales from Ozark’s Dark Side on Saturday evening, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.  Illuminated pathways will guide your way through Ozark legends, folktales, mysteries, superstitions, and natural wonders for spellbinding age-old storytelling. Visitors are encouraged to bring along flashlights and folding lawn chairs. Alley Mill is located six miles west of Eminence, Missouri on State Highway 106. Lexy Woolman blasted a three-run homer to cap off a seven-run third inning as the Salem Tigers behind the no-hit pitching of Shelby Carr defeated St. Clair in the first round of district play, 12-0 in five innings. Payton Curley, Bekah Kirker, Kari Hatridge and Trista Heavin all had two hits in the game as Salem improves to 16-10 on the year and will play Owensville at 4:30 today. The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will host Willow Springs tonight starting at 6:00 with the JV with the varsity match to follow.

The St. Louis Blues will open up their regular season tonight as they will host the Edmonton Oilers at the Scottrade Center. Funeral services for Gladys Moutray of Steelville, age 96, will be held Saturday morning  at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Butts, Missouri.

Funeral services for Betty JoAnn Gibbs of Salem, age 83, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Edgar Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

A Celebration of Life for Raymond Loyd Gollhofer of Salem, age 90, will be held Sunday from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the Wilson Family Center. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Love Pack Back Pack Program. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for John Lindon Best, formerly of Rolla, age 89, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Eastern Star service will be at 10:30 AM. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Shriner Children’s Hospital.
