missourinetLOCAL NEWS:

The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning in the Courthouse. During pubic comments at the beginning of the meeting, District Two Commissioner Gary Larson asked Salem News Reporter Andrew Sheeley if everything said here will be reported? Sheeley stated the affirmative. In response to an article in the Salem News Tuesday, Shirley Larson said, “She wanted to go on record that her husband is not sexist or a woman hater and that she had never been hit or slapped and I don’t think it was right what you reported and took out of context.” Sheeley said “I appreciate your comments.” Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that to his knowledge Gary has always taken a negative stance on any abuse or mistreatment of women. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County roads 6400, 5610, 5620 and 5650. He said that three crossover pipes would be installed on county road 5610 and materials would be hauled to those three sites. Purcell noted that he had a grader operator and a brush cutter operator out. Commissioner Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Road 5260, materials would be added to and grading done on county road 2530 and materials would be added to county road 2380. He went on to say that chip and seal patches were being repaired on county roads 3230, 3220 and 3260. Larson went on to say he had a call about driveway pipes. He noted that the policy has always been that the resident goes to Roberts-Judson Lumber Co., purchases the pipe, marks where they want it installed, the county picks the pipe up, delivers it to the site and installs it. The pickup and installation is done at no cost to the resident. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that on Tuesday all three Commissioners attended the Council for a Healthy Dent County banquet and that anyone not aware of what all is offered at the Community Center @ The Armory should stop by and take a tour of the facilities and learn what’s offered there. He noted that on Friday all three Commissioners would be attending the South Central Commissioners Meeting in Houston, Missouri. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley provided general voting information for the November 8th general election. Registration to vote in the general election ends at 5:00 pm on October 12th, absentee voting continues through November 7th, requests for absentee ballots by mail is October 26th, and that her office will be open for absentee voting on November 5th from 8:00 am until noon. She said that over 160 absentee ballots have been cast to date so she was expecting a good turnout in November. Curley went on to say that anyone with questions should call her office at (573) 729-4144. She said that she balanced with the Dent County treasurer on all accounts for September, she balanced with the Collector and Assessor on monthly collections, abatements and add-ons and the bills were being approved for payment. Skiles noted that the Commissioners approved Curley’s reports. He also noted that Randy League of the Blue Oval Club had been by prior to the meeting to thank the Commissioners for use of the Courthouse square. League noted that the club’s donations to a number of organizations this year were the most they’ve ever been able to contribute. Sheriff Rick Stallings was in to share the quarterly report on the Dent County Jail. The average inmate count for July was 41.45, for August was 46 and for September 51, with a high of 64. Stallings noted that the numbers are somewhat misleading since some inmates are housed at other jails. The Courthouse will be closed Monday in observance of Columbus Day so the next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
