The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of September. During the month, they wrote two equipment repair orders, 10 summons to appear in court, 14 warning tickets, and 10 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 12 accidents, one arson, two assaults, one burglary, one report of disorderly conduct, one report of domestic violence, one report of driving while intoxicated and/or drugged, three reports of driving while intoxicated, five reports of driving while having a license revoked and/or suspended, one report of failure to obey a lawful order of the police, one report of false impersonation to a law enforcement officer and three reports of leaving the scene of an accident. The department also investigated one report of a probate and/or parole violation, six reports of property damage, eight reports of stealing, one report of tampering, one report of a towed vehicle, one report of unlawful use of a weapon and two reports of a violation of a full order of protection. They also investigated six reports of possession amphetamine, three reports of possession of a controlled substance, five reports of possession of marijuana, two reports of possession of opium or a derivative, six reports of possession of drug paraphernalia, and one report of possession of synthetic drugs. The police department received 1,160 calls for service during the month, handled 106 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 44 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 23 hours in court testifying and four hours as court bailiff. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 6,447 miles and arrested 28 males and eight females all during the month of September.

The Bonebrake Center of Nature and History will present another “Skywatch" on Saturday, October 8th starting about 6:30 p.m. led by very experienced volunteers. These folks have done several highly successful sky watches at the Bonebrake Center and are knowledgeable amateur astronomers. Check out the new kid (and adult) friendly telescopes for use by visitors. The Moon will dominate the night, and the telescope views will show interesting craters and mountains. Mars and Saturn will also be bright in the west. The sky tour guides will point  out the Summer Triangle of stars and many summer constellations like Hercules and the Swan. The telescopes will help visitors see some double stars, like the colorful Albireo. Visitors are welcome to bring a telescope or binoculars or just come and view through the many telescopes at the event. The main requirement is to bring is a curiosity about the universe. The event will be mostly outdoors, so come prepared for the night air. The viewing event depends on good weather and clear skies. If there is cloudy weather, the event will be rescheduled. Interested parties may call 573-247-0279 on the afternoon of Saturday, October 8 to make sure the skies are going to cooperate!  There will be access to the house and light refreshments. There is no cost but donations are genuinely appreciated! Phone reservations are requested but not required. On Saturday, October 1st the Salem Marching Blue performed at the Valhalla Marching Band Festival at Parkview High School in Springfield, Missouri. The band performed well and placed second out of eight bands in Class B, missing finals by less than one half of a point. In addition to the band’s award, Salem High School senior Maddie Van Dien was awarded the trophy for “Outstanding Drum Major.” This is the second competition in a row that Maddie has earned this recognition. The Salem Marching Blue is under the direction of David Schatz with assistance from Lori Beazley. The Salem Marching Blue Color Guard also received the award for Most Outstanding Auxiliary. The color guard consists of Rachel Counts, Kristen Pike, and Alyssa Mayes. The Color Guard director is Kelsey Schatz. She says the color guard has branched beyond their normal routines and incorporated new contemporary and hip-hop styles of dancing into the show. The Salem Marching Blue will perform at the Branson Marching Band Festival this Saturday, October 8th at 10:15 a.m.

Shelby Carr blasted a two-run homer to cap off a nine-run 2nd inning and later hit a sacrifice fly to lead the Salem Tigers over Owensville Wednesday at Sullivan in Class 3, District 9 play, 11-8. Three other Lady Tigers finished with two RBI from the 2nd inning: Kirsten Strebe, Payton Curley and Camryn Pryor. Kari Hatridge homered to start the 2nd inning that tied the game at 1-1. Hatridge got the win even though the Tigers defense committed four errors behind her accounting for three unearned runs. Hatridge went seven innings and gave up eight hits, had five strikeouts, three walks and hit a batter. Salem is 21-4 on the year and they will face the Jeff City Helias Lady Crusaders today at 4:30. The game can be heard on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com, and it supposed to be carried live on Channel 6 and 406 on the Fidelity Communications Cable Network.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will hold their Senior Night tonight in between the JV and varsity contests with Cabool at the SHS gym. The JV game starts at 6:00 with the ceremony to follow for the only senior on the squad this year, Mikayla Cahill. The varsity game will then follow. Salem is 1-3 in the SCA and 5-18 overall.

Longtime St. Louis Blues defenseman Barrett Jackman announced his retirement Tuesday afternoon during a press conference at the Scottrade Center, where he signed a one-day contract to officially leave the game where his heart never actually left - with the St. Louis Blues. Jackman played 803 games a Blue before playing his last year in Columbus.

Funeral services for David R. Parker of Licking, age 77, will be held today at 2:00 at the Meredith Funeral Home in Grand Tower, Illinois. Visitation will be from 12:00 until service time in Illinois Interment will be in the Walker Hill Cemetery in Grand Tower, Illinois. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Noel Mason of Oates, Missouri, age 72, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Lesterville. Interment will be in the Myers Cemetery. A Masonic service will be held Wednesday night at 7:00 at the funeral home.

Funeral services for Clora M. Hatcher of Joplin, age 81, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Barton Cemetery.

Graveside service and interment for Galen Rex Beach of Leslie, age 67, will be held Saturday at 2:30 at the Mt. Hermon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family of Galen Beach. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Bobbie M. Major of Salem, age 78, will be held at 2:00 Sunday at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from noon until service time.  There will be no interment.

Funeral services for Herbert T. Rosario of Rolla, age 90, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Rolla. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 6:00 at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary with a Rosary Services at 5:00. Interment will be in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Waynesville.
