missourinetLOCAL NEWS:

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening at the City Hall Council Chambers. In the hearing of persons, Teresa Stark showed the aldermen pictures of weeds around her grandfather’s headstone showing it has not really been taken care of. There was a plant that appeared to be a flower which may be why the stone was not touched, but Stark was instructed to get in touch with the cemetery crew. Mayor Brad Nash did want to remind people that workers at the cemetery will be removing flowers this week to do an end of the year mowing and trimming and if people want their flowers, they should get them off the graves as soon as possible. They also will remove flowers in the Spring on April 15th to cut the grass. The board approved closing West Hunt Street from Missouri to Sligo Street for a Trunk or Treat by Oak Grove Baptist Church on Halloween from 5:00 to 8:30. The Board also followed the recommendation of the Planning and Zoning Commission and approved allowing a conditional use permit for parking and a structure at 800 and 802 South Orchard for Chilton Oil Trucks. The board tabled any decision on the Daycare at 100 South Hickory owned by Veronica Lato as they will have to get a building permit and be in compliance with all Planning and Zoning Measures before they can apply for the reviewed use permit. City Administrator Ray Walden reported a voltage regulator is out at the airport affecting a number of the lights there. Repair costs are estimated to be about $8,000 to $10,000, but the city may be able to get that problem corrected through their federal airport grant. Walden will get more information on that. Walden said Governor Nixon will be in Salem to recognize Salem’s Work Ready status on October 17th. He also said the city offices would be closed on October 10th. City Administrator Ray Walden and Water and Sewer Superintendent Jack Emory talked about the repair of the sewer machine and how COE Equipment repaired the machine without getting approval for a charge of over $3,000. The board approved the bill of $15,256.02 that includes a credit for the rental of a sewer machine while the city machine was being repaired. The board also approved paying $4,612.31 to cover the costs of repairs to the well controls. Walden will discuss the situation with the city’s insurance agent to see if submitting a claim would raise the city’s insurance premiums. The board approved Crystal Pilkington replacing her husband, Travis Pilkington on the Park Board who resigned due to his job, and they also approved the resignation of Bill Dobbs from the Board of Commissioners of the Housing Authority of Salem and to replace him with Doris Stempniak until the term expires on February 15, 2018. Administrator Walden went over a couple of budget adjustments to change two part time positions to a full time and also an adjustment to the Sewer Department budget to cover the cost of the machine repair and those adjustments were approved. The board then went into closed session.
