The 52nd Annual Rose Holland Trout Derby, Healthy Heart “Git-R-Done”, will take place at the Montauk State Park this Friday through Sunday, October 2nd through the 4th. Derby registration will be held Friday from 5:00 to 9:00 pm, Saturday from 6:30 am to 9:00 pm and Sunday from 6:30 to 11:30 am and registration is $2. Derby Fishing hours will be Saturday from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm and on Sunday from 7:30 to 11:30 am. There will be a Cruise into Montauk Car Show from 4:00 to 9:00 sponsored by the Current River Cruisers Club and then Trout Bingo at 6:00 pm on Friday. On Saturday, there will be free health screenings from 9:00 am until noon at the lodge sponsored by the Salem Memorial District Hospital, the Country Store will run from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm and Bake Shop will be open from 7:30 am to noon. Children’s activities start at 11:00 am and go to 3:00 pm in the field between the lodge and the mill. There will be Hike’s For Your Heart from 10:00 to 11:30 am and from 1:30 to 3:00 pm, and at 7:30 Saturday night, there will be the Night Hike! There will also be live entertainment from noon until 4:30 in front of the lodge and an Auction will be held at 5:00 pm Saturday in front of the lodge. On Sunday, the final day, prizes will be awarded at noon at lodge for men & women’s heaviest stringer, kids heaviest stringer, heaviest brown trout as well as tagged fish caught and registered. All proceeds from the 52nd Annual Rose Holland Trout Derby go to benefit the American Heart Association. Montauk State Park is located on Highway 119.

The Artist in the Woods display opens to the public on October 5th and will remain open until October 31st. Call now to reserve space to display your creations inspired by the woods such as: carving, caning, basket weaving, wooden toys, paintings, etc. Set-ups are going on now at the Ozark Natural & Cultural Resource Center at 202 South Main Street from 10:00 in the morning until 5:00 in the afternoon. An accident occurred on Thursday, September 24th at 9:15 in the morning at the intersection of North Jackson and West Second Streets in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, 2005 Chevrolet Impala driven by Larry Ray of Salem was traveling southbound on North Jackson approaching Second Street. A 2005 Ford Explorer XLT driven by Belinda Hollis of Eminence was traveling eastbound on Second Street and stopped at the stop sign. Hollis’s attention was temporarily distracted by a male pedestrian crossing Jackson walking south. Hollis then started in traffic making a right turn onto North Jackson and made contact was made with the Chevrolet Impala. Hollis stated her vision was obscured by the sun glare. Hollis suffered probable injury and sought her own medical treatment at the Salem Family Medicine Clinic. Ray and a passenger suffered probable injuries and south their own medical treatment at the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Both the Chevrolet Impala and the Ford Explorer sustained moderate damage.

This Friday through Sunday, October 2nd through the 4th, the Viburnum community will hold the 29th Annual Old Miners’ Days Festival, recognizing the region’s rich history as one of the world’s largest lead mining districts. This year, there will be several new features, including a 5K race and children’s carnival. One of the most popular activities during the festival takes visitors underground to see a working lead mine. Doe Run will offer free mine tours for guests 12 and older on Saturday, October 3rd, from 10 in the morning until 4:00 in the afternoon. Mine tour guests can register at Doe Run’s Old Miners’ Days booth, and buses will transport guests to and from the tour site. Typically a pleasant 65 degrees, the mines are rocky and damp, and feature glittering rock faces and dramatic rock pillars. Country music band Ricochet will perform a free concert on Saturday evening at 6:30. Other activities include a parade, car show, craft booths, children’s games, a talent show, and more. The University of Missouri Extension will be hosting Fall Field Day at the MU Wurdack Farm near Cook Station this Friday from 8:30 am to noon. Topics will include using cover crops to establish Novel Endophtye tall fescue, the value of cover crops as forage, dealing with weeds in your pasture and tall fescue toxicosis, cow genetics and productivity. Other topics to be covered are the value of different hay storage methods, Soil health what is it and how is it assessed, Oak tree death in the Ozark Forest: Patterns and Potential causes, and silvopasture: managing timber, forage and livestock. A free lunch will be served at noon. Gerritt Cole pitched seven solid innings and Francisco Cervelli hit a grand slam off a shaky Michael Wacha in an 8-2 win in the first game of a day-night doubleheader at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Matt Carpenter hit a home run in the game and Adam Wainwright returned from a five-month stay on the disabled list and gave up one run in the eighth, his first appearance out of the bullpen since 2006. In game two, Jason Heyward's third-inning grand slam powered the Cardinals over the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-1, giving St. Louis its third straight division title and 11th since 1994. The Cardinals are the National League Central Division champs. The Cardinals are off today, and will start a three-game set with the Braves Friday night at 6:35 on KSMO Radio.

Eric Hosmer hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 5-3 on Wednesday night to clinch home-field advantage in an AL Division Series. Alex Gordon and Mike Moustakas also homered for Kansas City, which had already clinched the AL Central title. The Royals play Chicago tonight at 7:10.

Missouri head football coach Gary Pinkel has suspended starting quarterback Maty Mauk and junior offensive lineman Malik Cuellar for this Saturday’s game against South Carolina for disciplinary reasons related to violation of team policies. That’s all the athletic department will say and the player’s status will be determined after this game.

The St. Louis Blues beat the Dallas Stars Tuesday night by the score of 4-1 in pre-season play and they will be hosting the Chicago Black Hawks in pre-season action tonight at 7:00 on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for Baby Calynne Harmony Diehl will be held Friday at 3:30 at the First Assembly of God Church in Steelville. Visitation will be from 1:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Martin Trask Cemetery in Cherryville. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Calynne Harmony Diehl Monument Trust Fund at the First Community National Bank in Steelville. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville.

Funeral services for Doris J. Eaves of Salem, age 82, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until service time Saturday. Interment will be in the Enke Cemetery.
