The 53rd Annual Rose Holland Trout Derby, Healthy Heart “The Beat Goes On”, will take place at the Montauk State Park this Friday through Sunday. Derby registration will be held Friday from 5:00 to 9:00 pm, Saturday from 6:30 am to 9:00 pm and Sunday from 6:30 to 11:30 am and registration is $2. Derby Fishing hours will be Saturday from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm and on Sunday from 7:30 to 11:30 am. There will be a Cruise into Montauk Car Show from 4:00 to 9:00 sponsored by the Current River Cruisers Club and then Trout Bingo at 6:00 pm on Friday. On Saturday, there will be free health screenings from 9:00 am until noon at the lodge sponsored by the Salem Memorial District Hospital, the Country Store will run from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm and Bake Shop will be open from 7:30 am to noon. Children’s activities start at 11:00 am and go to 3:00 pm in the field between the lodge and the mill and face painting from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. There will be Hike’s For Your Heart from 10:00 to 11:30 am and from 1:30 to 3:00 pm, and at 7:30 Saturday night, there will be the Night Hike! There will also be live entertainment from noon until 4:30 in front of the lodge and an Auction will be held at 5:00 pm Saturday in front of the lodge. On Sunday, the final day, prizes will be awarded at noon at lodge for attendance, the men & women’s heaviest stringer, kids heaviest stringer, heaviest brown trout as well as tagged fish caught and registered. All proceeds from the 53rd Annual Rose Holland Trout Derby go to benefit the American Heart Association. Montauk State Park is located on Highway 119 in southern Dent County.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reminds hunters they must show proof of their Hunter Education certification number to buy firearms hunting permits if their certification number is not already in the Department’s permits system. A hunter education course is required for hunters born on or after Jan. 1, 1967 who hunt with firearms. Proof of certification from any state is acceptable. Hunters can find their “Hunter Ed #” on the front of their Missouri Conservation Heritage Card, or on their temporary Hunter Education certificate. If hunters do not have one of these,they can call the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Hunter Education or Permit Services staff at 573-751-4115. If you need to get a Hunter Education Permit and have not attended a class, courses are on the mdc.mo.gov website. Two courses will be held at the Salem Community Center at the Armory on Monday, October 10th from 5:30 to 9:30 and on Friday, October 21st from 5:30 to 9:30. You must be 11 years of age by October 21st to register. Free study manuals can be picked up at Indian Trail Gun and Archery on Highway 19 north or at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Center at 202 North Main in Salem. Students MUST complete the study questions in the back of the manual and bring them to the class to participate. If you have any other questions, call 729-8163.

The city of Belle will host Meramec Regional Planning Commission’s (MRPC) 2016 Annual Dinner and award ceremony on Thursday, October 20th at the Belle/Bland Community Center in Belle. Residents in Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Osage, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties may purchase $25 tickets to attend the dinner and ceremonies. The city of Belle last hosted MRPC’s Annual Dinner in 1999, and U.S. Rep. JoAnn Emerson was the guest speaker. Current Mayor Steve Vogt was also mayor in 1999. Formed in 1969, MRPC is a voluntary council of governments serving Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Osage, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties and their respective cities. A professional staff of 21, directed by the MRPC board, offers technical assistance and services, such as grant preparation and administration, housing assistance, transportation planning, environmental planning, ordinance codification, business loans and other services to member communities.  For more information on getting tickets, contact the MRPC at 573-265-2993. The Wurdack Research Center Field Day, located about two miles southeast of Cook Station, will be held Friday, October 7th from 8:30 AM to noon, sponsored by FCNB Bank. Items for the Field Day include: the process of converting to Novel Endophyte Fescue; weather, climate and Ag application; timber management practices; antibiotic label changes and veterinary feed directive; precision Ag, VRT (variable rate technology) and more. The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will host Union today at the City of Salem Armory Field starting at 4:30. Salem enters the game with a 17-1 record. This is the final home game for the Lady Tigers who are ranked 41st in the All-School rankings in Missouri. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.

Adam Duvall’s two-run single was all Cincinnati needed as the Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 on Wednesday night. The Reds’ third win in their last four games dealt a blow to the Cardinals’ playoff hopes. St. Louis lost ground in the race for the two NL wild cards falling behind the New York Mets and the San Francisco Giants. The Cardinals play Cincinnati at 6:15 tonight.

The World Series champions have failed to make the postseason. The Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 5-2 on Wednesday night, but they were still knocked out of playoff contention. The Royals were eliminated when Baltimore beat Toronto 3-2. The Kansas City Royals will again play Minnesota tonight at 6:15.

Funeral services for Charles Gary Cubbage of Salem will be Friday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Chapel with a Masonic Service at 7:00 pm. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post # 99.

Funeral services for Carolyn Fulliam of Steelville, age 76, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Rivers of Life Fellowship Church in Steelville. Visitation will be held today from 5:00 to 8:00 and Friday from noon until 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

A visitation will be held for Anthony Nick Odom of Salem, age 56, on Friday from 4:00-6:00 P.M. at Fox Funeral Home in Licking. There is no service.

Funeral services for James I. Huskey of Rolla, age 78, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 Friday. Interment will be in the Pilot Knob Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Celebrate Recovery at the Ridgeview Christian Church.

Funeral services for Eva Maxine Asher of Desloge, age 93, will be held Saturday at 12:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in Boss Cemetery.
