The City of Salem “Community Wide Yard Sale” will be this Saturday all over town. You can pick up maps at the convenience stores in Salem, City of Salem Administrative offices, Salem Area Chamber of Commerce office and the map was also published in Tuesday’s Salem News. If you would like to sell your products and you need a place to do so, there are spaces available at the City Administrative Offices parking lot. The cost per space is $8.00 each and there are only five spaces left. If you are interested in reserving a space, contact Karen at city hall at 729-4811 by 4:00 Friday afternoon or stop by the administrative offices at 400 North Iron Street.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors met for their regular monthly meeting Tuesday evening at the hospital library. After reviewing the minutes, Board member George Gruendel questioned the minutes saying he did not want to be elected Chairman of the Finance Committee. The board agreed to appoint A.J Seay the Chairman and leave Gruendel as a committee member. Chief Financial Officer Monica Gargus gave the summary of operations for August that showed the hospital had a gain from operations of $162,646. Inpatient admissions, outpatient registrations and ER visits were all above budget. The cash flow statement showed a gain in cash of $808,748 for the month with days in accounts receivable at 55, compared to 50 in July. Chief Nursing Officer Mary Lou Brooks reported during the month there were 70 acute care admissions, and 838 emergency room visits with an average turnaround time of 123 minutes. Also during the month, there were 194 ambulance runs with 145 patients being transported to the hospital, 32 surgery cases, 214 home health visits, 1,651 outpatient registrations, 7,914 lab tests, 1,079 radiological procedures, 191 CT scans, 37 MRI scans, 8 nuclear med scans, 749 rehab treatments, 171 dialysis treatments and 328 clinical visits. Hospital Administrator Kasey Lucas said the health screenings this year drew 1,198 people. The dates for 2017 have already been set for February, May and September. He said the hospital is a partner in the "Feed Dent County" and they are offering their employees a payroll deduction if they want to help. He updated the Board on the SMDH Foundation fund raising events including the Montauk State Park 5K Run/Walk on November 5th; “Dancing with the Stars” on December 10th at the City Hall Auditorium in Salem; and the golf tournament next May 5th at the Spring Creek Golf Club. Lucas stated that the hospital auxiliary raised over $1,500 with their Books are Fun and Masquerade Jewelry Sales this month and they are also selling Christmas Wreaths through October 31st. A Purse Pallooza will be held at the Dent County Fire Station on October 13th and 14th, and the Scrubs and Beyond Sale will be October 27th in the hospital library. After the Chief of Staff's report, the board approved Courtesy Staff Privileges to Earl B. Moses, MD; Patricia O. MacFarland, MD and Derick Urban, MD, all in teleradiology. The board tabled the annual bylaw review until October and Lucas explained that he and Hospital Attorney Mark Weaver met with the Dent County Commission on the Hospital District Resolution and they did not object to making the change. He still needs to meet with the commissions from Crawford, Shannon and Iron counties. The Long-Term Care Unit had its annual survey done and there was only one minor deficiency that dealt with the residents personal funds. The hospital presented a plan of correction that was accepted and there will be no revisit. The Board approved going with One America to provide oversight for the employee 401-K retirement program. The board applied for the Level IV Stroke Center designation and the survey was completed on September 13th. A recommendation will be received within 30 days. The board approved the lease of a new ambulance from Osage Ambulance for $2,341 per month with another $3,000-$4,000 for the ambulance wrapping and lettering. This ambulance will be replacing ambulance 403 that has 316,000 miles on it. The new ambulance will be a Ford Transit T-350. They also approved the purchase of extrication cutters for the ambulance as the old ones were wore out. The purchase was made from RESQTEC for $4,800. The board voted to go into executive session.

The Salem Police Department has released reports involving a disturbance and arrest warrants. On Tuesday, September 13th at 5:33 pm, an officer was sent to a residence in the 100 block of South Jackson in reference to a disturbance. The report revealed a 27-year old Salem male had confronted someone with a knife and was in possession of methamphetamine. He was taken into custody for unlawful use of a weapon and possession of methamphetamine and was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Later that night at 10:34, an officer located a 34-year old Salem male in the 500 block of East Roosevelt with an active arrest warrant from Dent County.  He was taken into custody and incarcerated pending a court appearance. On Wednesday, September 14th at 2:41 in the afternoon, an officer located a 32-year old Salem female walking near Washington and Fifth with an active arrest warrant from Dent County. She was taken into custody and incarcerated pending a court appearance. Later that night at 7:19 an officer located a 34-year old Salem male in the 700 block of South Park who had an active arrest warrant from Dent County.  He was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending a court appearance. The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers won their fifth match of the year as they beat the Bunker Lady Eagles in two straight games Monday evening at the SHS gym, 25-9 and 25-13. Londyn Cook and Baylee Bilyou each had five kills with Madison Keith leading the way with seven assists. Salem is now 5-12 on the year.

Aledmys Diaz hit his first career grand slam and the St. Louis Cardinals finished with five home runs Tuesday night in a 12-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The St. Louis Cardinals are still one game behind San Francisco for the league’s final playoff spot as the Giants beat Colorado, 12-3. Cincinnati plays the St. Louis Cardinals tonight at 7:15. Billy Burns’ sacrifice fly scored Raul Mondesi in the 11th inning as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Minnesota Twins 4-3 Tuesday night, staving off postseason elimination. The defending World Series champions are five games behind Baltimore for the second AL wild card with five to play. Minnesota plays the Kansas City Royals at 6:15 tonight.

Funeral services for Charles Gary Cubbage of Salem will be Friday at 11:00 am at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Chapel with a Masonic Service at 7:00 pm. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post # 99.

Funeral services for Carolyn Fulliam of Steelville, age 76, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Rivers of Life Fellowship Church in Steelville. Visitation will be held Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 and Friday from noon until 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

A Visitation will be held for Anthony Nick Odom of Salem, age 56, of Salem, who passed away September 27, 2016 at the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M. at Fox Funeral Home in Licking, MO. There is no service.

Funeral services for James I. Huskey of Rolla, age 78, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Rolla Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 Friday. Interment will be in the Pilot Knob Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Celebrate Recovery at the Ridgeview Christian Church.
